IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT

STARRING CLARK GABLE AND CLAUDETTE COLBERT, DIRECTED BY FRANK CAPRA

On Sunday, November 17th, beginning at 12:00 Noon we will be having a Buffet Style Brunch followed by the classic film, "IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT" from 1934. The movie will begin at approximately 1:30 PM and it will all take place on the first level of The Central located in Mirvish Village, just one block west of Bathurst Station. The total cost for the brunch and movie is just $10.00 including all taxes. Drinks and Gratuities are extra. Also available is wine for just $4.50 per glass!!

THE STORY

Frank Capra's romantic comedy, which won all five major Academy Awards for 1934, is still as breezy and beguiling today. Claudette Colbert plays Ellie Andrews, a spoiled heiress who has married fortune-hunting aviator King Westley (Jameson Thomas), despite her father (Walter Connolly)'s objections. To keep Ellie from marrying this lothario, her father has been holding her prisoner aboard his yacht. But Ellie bolts from the yacht, swims ashore in her clothes, and eventually slips onto a Greyhound bus bound for New York. Aboard the bus is newspaper reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable), who has recently been fired for drinking on the job. Peter gets the last seat on the bus -- but when he gets up to argue with the bus driver, Ellie takes his seat. Since it is the last seat on the bus, they have to share it. When Ellie has her bag stolen and she refuses to report it, Peter begins to suspect something. The next morning, they both miss the bus after a leisurely breakfast, and Peter reveals that he knows her identity. She makes a deal with him: if he helps her get to New York, he can write a scoop about her for his paper. Peter thinks she is a spoiled brat, however, and refuses a monetary bribe: "I'm not interested in your money or your problem. You, King Westley, your father -- you're all a lot of hooey to me!" But as they travel northward and engage in a series of misadventures, the gruff newspaperman and the spoiled rich girl, thrown together by circumstances, fall in love with each other.

Thanks to everyone that made it out to It Happened One Night!! After 80 years this movie still stands up. I think that The Santa Claus Parade made it difficult for many to come and that was unfortunate.

Just one more bit of trivia. In the scene where Clark Gable is undressing in front of Claudette Colbert, he apparently was having difficulty taking off his T-Shirt and continuing with the flow of his dialogue. So they decided to scrap the T-Shirt altogether. After the movie came out the sales of T-Shirts plunged sharply. The T-Shirt companies wanted to sue Columbia Pictures because of this. In 1955 the manufacturers of T-Shirts boomed after James Dean wore a T-Shirt in Rebel Without a Cause.

One of my favourite screwball comedies. I always feel like I can rewind the movie when I've finished watching it and see it all over again!

I'm so glad I got off my butt and made it out to see this movie. It's always been one of my favourites. What a friendly group of people, which made the brunch very pleasant! I wish people had hung around for a bit afterwards to discuss the movie though. I would have enjoyed hearing what people had to say about it. Thanks for organizing this, Alex!

Alex, has it been pointed out this is the Sunday for the Toronto Santa Clause Parade? It also starts at noon, so this may affect some people with road closures and traffic.

I think I'll skip out on this one (seen it a few times already), but I hope you have some more screwball comedies soon. Rom-coms of the '30s were great, and I'd love to see more of them.

Thanks Alex...I've been meaning to join your group for a long time! I should have mentioned, of course, the 'magic' that Capra weaves into all his films. You know what I mean :)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
