Trip Summary

On Friday we will board our bus in Toronto and travel to Sault. Ste. Marie. On our way, we will stop in Sudbury to visit the Big Nickel for some photos and a lunch break. A boxed picnic lunch is included in the price.

Upon arrival in Sault. Ste. Marie, we will check into our hotel. After check-in, for those who are interested, we will go to a local restaurant for a dinner. The cost of the dinner is not included in the trip price and you are also free to spend your time as you wish; there are numerous dining options near the hote.

On Saturday, we wake up bright and early to board the bus to take us to the Algoma Central Railway Train Terminal. We board the train at 7:30 AM. The train departs at 8 AM and returns at 6 PM.

This one-day wilderness excursion will transport us 251 km. north of Sault Ste. Marie, over towering trestles, alongside pristine lakes and rivers and through awesome granite rock formations and vast forests.

All of the coaches have been recently refurbished and installed with extra large windows so we will truly get to appreciate the beauty of the region and experience the same rugged landscapes that inspired the Group of Seven to create some of Canada’s most notable landscape art.

The train will begin its descent into the Agawa canyon at Mile 102 (224 Km) and as the rail line hugs the top of the canyon wall we will travel down 500 feet over the next 10 miles (16 Km) to the floor of the canyon, created over 1.2 billion years ago by faulting and widened and reshaped by the last ice-age.

As the train pulls to a stop at Mile 114 (251 Km), we will have one and a half hours to experience the pristine beauty of Canyon Park up close. We can enjoy scenic walks on trails leading to several waterfalls or experience an invigorating climb up over 300 stairs to the breathtaking Lookout, perched 250 feet above the canyon floor. For those who are looking for something a little more relaxing, we can enjoy a peaceful break in the many picnic areas located throughout the park or just pull up a bench and watch the Agawa River slowly flow peacefully by.

We will be having our breakfast in the dining car on the train and we will also be provided a boxed lunch from the catering car when we get closer to the canyon. Both the breakfast and lunch are included in the trip price. We will return to Sault. Ste. Marie at 6PM.

After we return and freshen up, we will visit the Kewadin Casino in Sault. Ste. Marie, Michigan, just across the International Bridge from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The casino will provide us with some dining and slot play incentives. Your dining coupon can be used towards any of the food outlets in the casino although most of the group will be dining in the casino buffet.

This side trip to the casino is completely optional and again, you are free to spend Saturday evening as you wish. If you do wish to travel with us to the casino, please remember, passports are required for all international crossings.

We will have our breakfast at the hotel on Sunday morning and then pack our bags, check out and make our way back to Toronto.

We will be stopping in the beautiful town of Parry Sound on our way back for some early dinner before arriving in Toronto.
