Discover Toronto Neighbourhood Walk IV - The Long Lost River of Garrison Creek

Then and now. Back then there was a river (Garrison Creek) that used to run through the streets of West end downtown Toronto. Now the river is buried underneath the homes and streets of the same location. (Photo by BlogTO)

This is the fourth of the Discover Toronto Neighbourhood Walk I'm doing. It's just a casual walk along a scenic or beautiful place in Toronto. If it's popular with you guys, I'll keep doing them. I actually have a quite a few walks that I've discover that I wanted to share with the group.

This walk will follow the trails of the long-lost Garrison Creek in West downtown Toronto. This was a small river that used to run through downtown Toronto. And now it's been buried under the streets of Toronto and even under some homes! If you enjoy discovering something new, while enjoying the downtown scenery, this walk is for you!

We are following the exact same path as the Discovery Walk website. Here is the link:

http://www.toronto.ca/parks/pdf/trails/DW_Garrison.pdf

This is the general path we're taking:

http://goo.gl/maps/rmsvW

We are going to start at Christie subway station. Then we walk south towards Bathurst/King by following where the Garrison Creek used to flow. We'll grab a cup of coffee or something to eat after the walk is done! There are tons of restaurants and coffee shops in the area!

Exit Points

If you don't want to do the entire walk, you can always stop and take the bus midway through. We will pass by several TTC streetcars along the way, so if you ever get tired, you can leave whenever you'd like.

Bring your cameras and have fun enjoying the scenery while socializing with your fellow TNT members!

How to Prepare for the walk

1) Normally I'd say bring a jacket since it may get colder during the walk, but it's summer so you don't need to worry about that. :)

2) Please use the washroom before meeting up for the event. Fortunately for this walk, there will be tons of restaurants and a few parks, so there will be lots of washrooms along the way. But it would be better you use the bathroom before the walk if you need to.

3) Bring some food and water with you in case you get hungry or thirsty.

4) Bring your camera! There will be lots of cool things to take pictures of.

Where We'll Meet

We will meeting at Christie subway station at 2 p.m. on the top level of the station, where the TTC collector booth is.

If you get lost or need directions, you can call me at [masked]-9218.

Despite the weather, we had a great turnout - 20+ people - and it only rained lightly for awhile shortly after the walk started. We spent about 2 hours walking a sometimes quite meandering route from Christie/Bloor Sts to King/Bathurst, passing through residential neighbourhoods and several parks on the way, incl. Trinity Bellwoods. Afterward about a dozen of us ended up on the patio at The Foggy Dew for food and drinks and the sun came out while we were there. Thanks to Roger for organizing a very interesting walk which helped make my 1st Meetup w/this Group quite enjoyable.

Thank's Roger for a fun afternoon walk that ended in a familiar neighbourhood with cold drinks and food. Looking forward to future walk where we might get to see some Fall colour in the city.

It was a fun day. I'm thinking, they should actually paint the creek on the road so we have a better idea how it runs. A lot of nice, fun, friendly people. Which I find seem to flock to Roger's meets. A nice time at the restaurant patio after. A shame some people couldn't join us. Thanks again Roger.

Hi. Does anyone know if there's free parking available in the area? Tia.

    August 30, 2013

    • Chris

maybe you can park on the street because it's Saturday.

      1 · August 30, 2013

    • Roger

I'm sure there's free parking on the side streets in the area. It might be tough to get one since it's close to the Annex, but I'm sure if you drive around, you'll find one! It's 3 hour limit for free side street parking
