Between 200 and 350 people show up every year to make our annual picnic a spectacular day full of fun, games, music, laughter, chit-chatting and making new friends.

For the 5th year in a row, we're going back to the same spot in the Toronto Islands for the 2014 Toronto Social Group Annual Picnic & Bonfire. As usual, we have our very own reserved picnic area with a bonfire pit and volleyball nets on Centre Island.
There is no charge for this event! It's a picnic so just bring your own food and drink... and be prepared to meet lots of people and have tons of chit-chatting and laughing.
There will be lots of fun games and activities during the day and at dusk we will light our bonfire and toast marshmallows and dance and sing songs under the moonlight and the stars. (Note: The fire-pit is NOT for cooking, it is simply to light a bonfire and toast marshmallows or whatever else!)
Children, grand-children, parents and grand-parents, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and your friends & neighbours are all welcome to join us. Pets on a leash are also welcome. You may also bring your bicycles, skateboards and rollerblades but please note that you cannot wear your rollerblades on the ferry itself.
Last year a number of members arranged all kinds of fun activities like a three-legged-race, egg-carrying race, wheelbarrow race, bingo, puzzle solving contest and a cookie eating contest. We will be having these types of games again this year.
We are going to be right next door to the volleyball nets and and very close to the snack bar, washrooms, Centreville Amusement Park, Lagoon Theatre and the Wading Pool. You can rent bicycles and tour the islands or if you feel more energetic, you can rent a boat. There are splash pads and wading pools for the younger children and you can also board the tram and get a tour of the island. For something more sedate, there is always a nice stroll through their gardens.
The picnic area license fee and fire insurance has been paid and as dusk falls, we will light our bonfire, play music and toast marshmallows.
Centre Island Ferry
To get to Centre Island, you need to take the Centre Island ferry. This can be boarded at the foot of Bay Street on the south side of Queen's Quay. The ferry runs every 30 minutes. The fare in 2013 was $7.00 for adults and $3.50 for children under 14. There is no charge for pets on a leash.
We will NOT be meeting at the ferry terminal. Please make your own way to our picnic area. Details are below.
Our Picnic Spot
Our reserved picnic area is Area #22 on Olympic Island. It will be marked with a Meetup sign and the Toronto Social Group logo. To get an idea of how to get there, please have a look at the Toronto Island Picnic Area Map. To open it, click here.
Simple 5-Step Directions On How To Get To Our Picnic Spot
• Take ferry to Centre Island. (Ferry leaves from the foot of Bay St.)
• Come off the ferry and turn immediate left and walk along the metal railing.
• Turn left over the first bridge and go straight after you have crossed the bridge. (FYI, after you have crossed this bridge, you are technically on Olympic Island. )
• After 3 minutes of walking, you will pass washrooms on the left hand side.
• Keep walking and you will see a volleyball net on the left hand side. That is our area!
• Look for the Toronto Social Group sign. Our picnic volunteers will be wearing orange name tags.
If you get lost, ask any of the park staff to direct you to the Centreville Amusement Park. There is a bridge next to the childrens' rides that leads to Olympic Island. Cross this bridge and our picnic area will be the second area on the right. Look for the Toronto Social Group sign.
There are numerous places to purchase food, or of course you can always pack a picnic hamper or cooler.... I mean, this is a picnic after all! LOL
Although we have exclusive use of the picnic benches in our area, there will obviously not be enough seating for everyone so please feel free to bring your own lawn chair or sheets and blankets for the grass if you wish. Don't forget your sunscreen and bottled water, your camera and a happy attitude and we will all have an amazing picnic!
As mentioned above, you are welcome to bring your dog(s) but Toronto Islands requires that they be on a leash at all times. If you are bringing dogs, please observe poop'n'scoop bylaws and also be sensitive to those members in our group who may not be comfortable around animals and respect their wishes.
Please note that all City of Toronto parks are an alcohol-free zone.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all there for another awesome Toronto Social Group picnic!
