Sauvie Island Loop (11mi) - 2013 TDC Training Ride

The 2013 Tour de Cure Training Ride series continues with a 11 mile loop around Sauvie Island (North Portland). This is a flat road ride with relatively low traffic this time of year (although the weather can make it a challenge). Meet at the parking lot at the base of the Sauvie Island bridge (look for the Tour de Cure banner).

This is a full-support "ride your own pace" event, with sweeper cyclists bringing up the caboose and a support vehicle on the road. To assist those riding on bicycles that haven't seen the light of day in years, The Missing Link will be providing a mechanic one hour before the ride (9am, for a 10am start) for safety checks and minor adjustments.

Cyclists do not have to be registered for Tour de Cure, but we will be happy to tell you why you should join us at the July event and fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. Please RSVP above so we can have enough breakfast food. Route map: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/969227

Please bring the following form, with your printed name, signed name, and date of ride. You do not need to fill out the rest of the information.

Multnomah County is conducting a planning survey on the use of Sauvie Island. This survey closes March 15th. As always, there are two primary factions - those that enjoy the scenic beauty of the island, particularly for cycling, and those that are inconvenienced by all the cyclists on the island clogging roads that are completely inadequate to handle any non-auto traffic (including pedestrians). You may have seen one of the locals taking pictures of our group, as evidence that bicycles should be banned from the island. Might be worth taking a few minutes to fill out this survey... https://multco.us/simc-survey

This is my first ride...I just hope I don't make a fool of myself. I have to start somewhere.

Kathy - that was how I felt last year on my first ride. I am a recreational rider and was very anxious. I had a great time! Everyone was/is super friendly and helpful. I'm still ride mostly at the back of pack, but have never had anything less than a marvelous time.

Could not have asked for better weather conditions today. No accidents. No mishaps. Only one disgruntled farmer taking pictures of our peloton. Hopefully we all demonstrated the best rider courtesy to the neighborhood folks.

Will be a good first ride, easing into the season. Any recommendations on bike shops? My bike needs some light adjustments to really kick into gear.

I'm on the Beaverton side, and have used Beaverton Bike Gallery for years.

The Missing Link on NE Sandy at 72nd Ave has been very supportive of new TdC riders, and has a very approachable, knowledgeable staff who are very practical with their suggestions for new riders. Ditto Kent's comments about Bike Gallery if Missing Link isn't near you, though.

As this is our first "road ride", it is a good time to point out that we have lots of helpful topic guides for new riders, under the "pages" menu and the "discussion" menu above. For this ride in particular, I'd like to point out the following one specifically. See you tomorrow! http://www.meetup.com/Tourdecurepdxvan/pages/Why_single-line_riding_is_your_friend

The numbers are growing for those that will be riding this weekend on Sauvie Island. Couple last minute items. Missing Link will be there at around 9:00 am to make any miner adjustments to those who need it for their bikes. They are also osting a bike clinic next week on the 13th. there is a meetup on that event. As always helmets are required to ride with us and waivers. Weather is suppose to be great see everyone there.

The weather forecast for Saturday is sunshine and clouds, a high in the afternoon of over 60 degrees and no rain! The temperature will be in the mid-50s at the start of our ride.

I'll be riding out to the ride from downtown Portland if anybody wants to get the extra miles. Contact me directly if you want to meet to ride.

If my bike is out of the shop Friday afternoon I hope to join in on the fun. Right now I do not think it will be ready until Saturday morning so will have to miss out. Weather looks great so have a great time

The guests are small and, based on last week, limit their eating to bagels and chocolate. :-)
