Double Bridge Ride 20Mi/ 11Mi - 2013 TDC Training Ride

The 2013 Tour de Cure Training Ride series continues. This weeks' ride is a Double Bridge 205/I5 loop 20 miles.  There is an alternate 11 mile short route - an out and back on MacArthur/McGilliveray. Meet at the parking lot across the street from the River Maiden (look for the Tour de Cure banner).

This is a full-support "ride your own pace" event, with lead riders for both distances, and support vehicles on the road. An optional "pocket change" donation for the support (at the food table) would be most appreciated. A resupply stop will be available for the long route only.  A waiver form needs to be signed, so come a little early, so we can start promptly.  Or bring the following form, with your printed name, signed name, and date of ride. You do not need to fill out the rest of the information.

Cyclists do not have to be registered for Tour de Cure, but we will be happy to tell you why you should join us at the July event and fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. Please RSVP above so we can have enough breakfast food.

So glad everybody seemed to enjoy the ride as much as I did. Great to share a ride with so many happy people on bikes. Great job everyone.

Thank you Rob and Jon for creating such a fun route. Riding the bridges made me feel like a teenager again. And a special shoutout to all of the cyclists who rode at the back and finished the route, you have a lot to beam about and be proud of your achievement.

Not only did I complete the full ride - but I'm still walking and awake! Lot of progress over the past year.

Fantastic weather. Another great crowd. A few "scenic detours" in the back group, but everyone returned to base. And we had at least 15 folks stay on for lunch after the ride :)

I am unable to make it tomorrow. I am so disappointed. I was looking forward to the ride and it should be a perfect day. Enjoy.

You'll be missed, Kathy. Should we keep an eye out for Kate or are you a riding duo?

      March 29, 2013

    • Darcy W.

Will miss you and Kate. Next week is Hagg Lake. If you go around the lake, it is a series of short steep rollers. If you take the other route out of the park, there is just one steep little climb to get back into the park. If you need to get off the bike and walk a hill, pushing a bike up a hill is just as good of a cardio workout as riding the bike up the hill. And Hagg Lake is really scenic.

Especially for those planning to be on the caboose end of the 20mi - you want to have at minimum one 24-oz water bottle. If you can accomodate two, do so. Even with an expected water stop, it is always good to have extra, just in case, especially on the first warm ride of the season. You should plan on consuming at least one full bottle an hour, minimum.

I check and Beaches does have bike racks for those riding there. Not that they have enough for 41 of us...LOL

I am going to add about 15 miles on after if people want to continue on. Let me know.

      DJ - quite possibly - let's talk tomorrow ...

      March 29, 2013

    • DJ P.

Sweet. Will be riding in from 122nd tomorrow. Will more than likely be heading east on Marine Blvd. See how we all feel. See everyone tomorrow.

Just a pre-ride email. The forecast is for sunny and warm so be prepared to shed some winter clothing. We will meet in the School Parking lot on Devine Rd and MacArthur Blvd across from the River Maiden coffee. The 11 mile route is and out and back on city street with bike lanes and is flat. The 20 mile double bridge is both street and bike trails. After the ride some people are going to head down to Beaches Restuarant on the Columbia River for lunch. The Missing Link will not be at any more of our trainning rides for adjustments. If you are needing a tune up give them a call. As always helemts are required to ride with us. See everyone Saturday.

Robin - just means you need to help me get the caboose moving, so we have time for lunch :)

      1 · March 29, 2013

Last time I was there they did have a bike rack, but I will call toady and confirm and post up the answer.

    March 29, 2013

  • Jon D.

Also to anybody looking for more distance Rob Roark, Michael Whitehed, and myself will be pre-riding the two bridege course before the ride. Holler if you want to join.

A little reminder ... if you are not yet registered for Tour de Cure, you may register at the training rides, and save $10 off of your registration fee!

Thank you for responding to my call for opinions. They were most helpful. The opinion was near overwhelming - Go For It. So... the Double Bridge ride is ON as planned. No change to meeting location or start time. We may take a few more minutes to get through the morning banter, but otherwise, here we go! And we'll improvise if the situation requires it. Besides, they're now forecasting 70 degrees on Saturday! How can we miss that? See you Saturday.

I'm OK with taking our chances on the bridges.

Hi Lorene, and welcome! Our rides are "set your own pace" rides, so the answer to your question is "it depends." Our short rides are intended for beginner bicyclists, who are just getting started and don't feel comfortable or confident about distances or hills (yet). This week's 11 mile ride should take riders about an hour, at most. So they should be done about 11:30 latest. But I see you're tag is "ready to ride on bridges", so I'll assume you want to do the 20 mile route. Its all about pace. The faster riders will likely be done in about an 90 minutes. The slowest riders (including the Lantern Rouge) about 2 hours or so. And we make every effort to make sure that everyone gets back and is accounted for. So if a rider finds that they "are in over their head", we will drive them back to base.

For any riders debating between the short and long loop - I plan on shepherding the slowest group of the 20 milers. We will be stopping at several spots along the way to make sure that the last rider stays with the lantern rouge. Also so that I can look at the map! (this is my first time on the bridges too!) Just make sure I know who is joining in the "autobus" (the caboose of the peloton) at the Saturday start :)

On the Jackson Bottom ride, a number of us met for lunch after. It was a lot of fun to put names to new faces and to talk about how cold it was. Can anyone suggest a place for us to congregate after the Double Bridge ride, with ample parking that is safe for bikes on car racks, and an establishment friendly to cyclists with tables that can be put together for us to sit at? The most important thing that came out of the post-ride lunch were a number of cyclists that realized that they can ride the longer route for the Double Bridge, so this ride will be a huge success for them!

    2 · March 23, 2013

  • Rob R.

Yes it is on city streets with most of it having bike lanes and the short area without is low traffic.

    March 22, 2013

  • Robin M.

Can you tell me more about the 11 mile ride? Is this surface streets? Is it a city ride? I'm not familiar with the area.
