Monster Cookie (Salem Bike Club) 30mi/60mi - NOT an ADA/TDC Supported Ride

The Tour de Cure Group Ride series continues with an event ride hosted by the Salem Bicycle Club. The Monster Cookie is their signature event, and is the traditional start of the regional bicycle season. The ride is a 60 mile "metric century". However, riders can turn back at the first/third rest stop and complete "half a Cookie". This is a road ride, almost entirely flat.

The Salem Bicycle Club runs this event, and we are their guests, supporting a common cause of health through cycling. Riders are responsible for their own registration to this event. Use this meetup page to coordinate with ride partners.

Half-Cookie (30mi) riders - If you'd like familiar company, TDC Group riders can coordinate a group sendoff on this meetup.  Wear your Tour de Cure gear, and promote our July ride! Suggest gathering at the Capitol Steps (Court St, across from the registration tables) about 8:15am (full 60-milers).  Given the rain forecast, the second group will likely get together about 8:30-8:45.  But don't get soaked just to wait for folks - follow the masses.  Start may be delayed, depending on how crowded the registration lines are.

More information, including maps and online registration ($25 before April 18th), is on the Salem Bicycle club website: http://www.salembicycleclub.org/content.plx?page=majrides )

That was "wet start" to say the least and driving into some serious rain out of the gate. Cam really drove a hard pace to and from - we were freezing cold and so was she. Luckily it cleared with the sun warming us up heading back to Salem. Thanks to Julian for saving us four times or we would have ended up in California!! The sights and scenery were beautiful, hopefully it will be equally beautiful next year

Great ride except for the crazy weather. Well supported.

Super fun riding with a great group of friends!
Lunch was yummy. The strawberries and cream were a nice bonus. The heavy rain, sun, high winds, rain, sun, hail, sun, hail made it a challenging ride. Delicious soft monster cookies at the end.

The anti-heat year. Periods of dumping rain, strong southerly winds. No hail on the southern half, but I heard the northern crew got hammered. A lot of no-shows at the reg (estimated crowd of 800), and a lot more riders turned back at half a cookie.

Wow, worst weather ever for this event: a deluge of rain, strong winds and biting hail.

44 degrees at the start New rain. Once we left salem the stopped. Here is to hoping the rain stays away as I head back to salem. Only did 30 miles

I hear this is a "must ride", however I'm looking to connect with someone who is either going down the night before, or early on Sunday morning. I live in Beaverton Central (off Allen between Murray and Hall). This will be my first Monster Cookie and want to represent ADA/TDC on this ride in preparation for this year's TDC. If you or someone else is on this ride, please let me know if I can rideshare with you. Thanks. Michael

If you're doing 60, the group shot likely will be between 8am and 8:15am, as Ms Darcy will want to get on the road :)

Mailed my check. My intent is to do the 60mile, unless it's pouring rain. See y'all in Salem ;-) .

I am going to drop a car at the Champoeg exit and carpool down to Salem so I can bail at the halfway mark if needed.

Team Nakagawa, Janie Hanse, Nance Stone and I all want to paceline with you for the entire ride, including the lunch stop at the park. Can you give us a start time and where to meet you? If anyone else wants to join us, chime in here. Our average speed in a paceline will be anywhere from 12 to 15, given the weather and wind; we are moderate cyclists.

The capitol steps are a good meeting place for visibility and photo ops.

    • Kent N.

The more relaxed half of TeamNakagawa (Kent, Margo, Elena) will be doing the half cookie. We will be on the Capitol steps between 8:30 and 8:45 for a photo op with any TDC riders joining in.

Team Red, please wear your Team Red, Red Rider or Tour de Cure jersey so that we may brand Tour de Cure on this event ride.
