This hike is rated VERY DIFFICULT!

One of my favorite trails is on Wilson Mountain! This hike heads straight for some of the most panoramic views in the Sedona area. This is a long hard climb but along the way we will have outstanding scenery including Oak Creek Canyon, the Dry Creek basin and the Mogollon Rim.  We'll pause at the top for lunch before heading back the way we came.  Please remember to carry plenty of water, nutritious snacks & lunch, hats, sunscreen, good shoes, cameras and plenty of water. Let me know if you plan to meet at the carpool location or directly at the trailhead!

A Red Rock Pass is required so be sure the drivers have one to display.

DISTANCE: 8 miles roundtrip
ELEVATION GAIN: 2300 ft
TRAIL STYLE: In-and-out style
DURATION: 5+ hours
DOGS: Not recommended.
FACILITIES: Outhouse
WEBSITE: Forest Service

CARPOOL LOCATION: We'll meet at the McDonald's parking lot at the intersection of Carefree Highway and I17. The address is 3140 W Carefree Highway, Phoenix, AZ. Park along the wall by the street. We'll leave there by 7:00 am!

DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD: Follow the Google map link above to Midgley Bridge located about 1 mile NE outside Sedona on Rt 89A. The coordinates are 34.886, -111.742. The trailhead is located immediately after (the east side of) the bridge. Parking is limited so consider carpooling. We'll meet there at 9:00 am!

5 stars to the hike, views, fellow hikers, and organizer. 1/2 star to me for my poor performance, inferior pre-hike planning, and insufficient water supplies. I felt worthless and weak, but I was still glad to have tagged along. Let me be a lesson to others who may be losing their edge: It hurts to get back into fighting form. So stay fit and active, prepare wisely, and carry more water than you need. See you 'round the trails.

I have never done this hike. I am on call the night prior, so 75% chance I can make it to the carpool. I will let you know if I need to cancel.

Kaveh, I am trying to find out from the reviews if the difficulty is the elevation change alone (and distance) or the trail too. Having some knee issues and would prefer the trail to not have a lot of rocks to hop over. Any idea on that one?

Christa - the rating is from the elevation gain and distance. The trail itself was relatively clear when I did it last year. I would use trekking poles to protect your knees.

So looking forward to this hike. Shelley, Bill and I are driving together. Once we decide who is driving, we may have room for one or 2 more. Thx, Kaveh
