Evening hike on Stoney Mountain Ridgeline

This hike is rated DIFFICULT.

Come out for an evening hike on the Stoney Mountain Ridgeline! This section of the Phoenix Mountains is located between Cave Creek Road and AZ Rt 51. We'll start from the Dreamy Draw Parking lot and cross the tunnel under the highway into the preserve. From there we'll use the #100 trail to get into the Stoney Mountain South section. Eventually we'll locate our secret trail and climb one of the peaks for excellent views of the city. Careful, the trail here is extremely steep and slippery. Once at the top, we'll make our way for a short distance along the ridgeline and then head back down another trail back to the #100. Parts of the ridgeline section are a little iffy. Expect to hand scramble, butt slide and/or crab-walk along the way. Because of that, I expect only experienced and fit night hikers on this one, no first-timers! You're encouraged to bring snacks, cameras, and must bring at least 2+ liters of water per person and sturdy hiking footwear. You should also bring a flashlight and/or a headlamp as we'll be in the dark during this hike.

DISTANCE: 3.5+ miles roundtrip
ELEVATION GAIN: 650 ft (parts very steep!)
DURATION: 2 hours
DOGS: Yes if leashed, but you may have to carry.
FACILITIES: Bathroom and water fountain
WEBSITE: Trailmap
DIRECTIONS: AZ Route 51 to exit 7 - Northern Ave. Head east on Northern Ave and you'll immediately enter the park. Continue on the winding access rd until you reach the parking lot.

Even though I didn't make it to the summit, it was still a great hike! The heat got to me a little too soon. Beautiful sunset! Great to see everyone. Thanks for leading, Kaveh!

Great hike though it tested my fear of heights and made me use muscles I never knew I had. Legs & arms are gonna be sore tomorrow. Well worth it!
