Desert Tortoise Trail

This hike is rated EASY.

For something different we are going to head North to the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. We will see a nice sunrise and conditions permitting watch the hot air balloons launch and maybe soar over our heads.

This is a nice scenic easy hike along well groomed trails in the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve just north of Phoenix. We start climbing the Hawk's Nest trail to Desert Tortoise which will then take us down to the Valley Verde Trail. We will take the Valley Verde trail which climbs to the Dixie Mountain Loop. Finally we will take the Dixie Mountain Loop back to Hawk's Nest and we will descend to the parking lot.

This group will maintain a nice comfortable pace with stops for water, pictures, and catching our breath. So bring lots of water, a camera, and good conversation. Sturdy sneakers are okay, but hiking boots are always a bit better. Also be sure to wear sunscreen, a hat, and appropriate clothing for the weather (it is chilly when we start but quickly warms up so layers are best).

DIRECTIONS: Take Interstate 17 to Jomax Rd. Go East on Jomax Rd. At the first traffic light - turn left onto Norterra Pkwy (0.3 miles). Turn right onto N North Valley Pkwy (1.3 miles). Take the 1st left onto W Copperhead Trail (0.2 miles). Turn left onto N Melvern Trail (0.2 miles). Take the 1st right onto W Desert Vista Trail (after the entrance to "Fireside"). You will follow the small entrance road through a gate and come to the parking area.
