Tom Thumb Loop

Rating Difficult

Length:  10.3 round trip miles

Elevation:  1,600 feet

Duration:  5 hours

Pace: Moderate

Lots of water/rest breaks and a lunch break at the Windgate/Tom Thumb Junction.

Let's hike Tom Thumb as a loop for added elevation and mileage!  I want to put all my weekday hiking to the test and do a challenging hike, but at a very mellow pace with lots of rest/water breaks.  Great scenery hike, with a challenge for fit hikers.

I plan on doing this as a giant loop.  First we will take the feeder trail to Tom Thumb, but instead of going all the way up, we will turn on East End.  East End will be in a nice downhill grade.  We will junction with Windgate which will offer some great pictures, and rolls in a slight uphill grade until it meets up with Tom Thumb on the backside.  We will take a 20 min lunch/rest break here.  The fun will be on Tom Thumb!  It is steep in places and has several switchbacks to give a great workout.  Once we reach the saddle, it is a short distance to the peak or thumb.  We will go down the front side to reach the end.

I am not a big fan of poles, but I am breaking mine out on this hike.  The downhill in the end of the hike is hard on the knees.

I would not recommend dogs on this trail, but they are allowed on leash.  Only children with lots of hiking experience on this one.  Friends and family always welcomed.  Bring a sense of humor because I will need some laughs to get me up the switchbacks because I may be crying!! Hahahaha.

Thank you everyone for hiking with me. That was one hard, sweaty, and very beautiful hike. Sophia definitely gets the award for hiking dog of the year. She keeps on going with a watchful eye on her mommy and the group!

I finally found the Ogre's Den :) I will remember how to get there next time. Chele, thanks for leading the hike. Sophia had a great time. I think we ended up doing at least 12 miles.

Hi Jeff, as long as your lab is on leash and you have lots of water for the lab. Labs will do great on this hike! I would bring mine, but he is 11 and his hiking days consist of sleeping on the floor. Ha!
