  • March 16, 2013 · 7:00 AM

DISTANCE: 9.6 Miles RT

SKILL LEVEL: STRENUOUS (This is not a beginner hike!)

Start-End Elevation: 9,240' to 10,630'

Net Elevation Change: +1,390'

ALL MEMBERS MUST JOIN THE WAIT LIST TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS HIKE... Members will be added based on my own and/or the groups past hiking experience with members and other factors. RSVP and no-show history will be considered as well. If you do not make it on the attending list for this hike, we will see you on the next one! :)

CARPOOL: 7:00 is the Carpool time, NOT the Trailhead time!!

For those interested in carpooling from Denver, I suggest meeting at the 88th and Sheridan Park-n-Ride (west side of Hwy 36, north end of lot) at 6:50 and leaving no later than 7:00. I will not be at the carpool location, but will meet attendees at the trailhead.  We will leave the trailhead at 9:00.

DIRECTIONS:

From Lyons continue on Hwy 36 to Estes Park... The Beaver Meadows Entrance Station is located 3.6 miles west of Estes Park..follows the signs.  From the Entrance Station take the first left onto Bear Lake Road.  Drive approximately 8 miles to the Glacier Gorge parking lot.

TRAIL RESTRICTIONS:

Dogs Allowed: NO

TRAIL DESCRIPTION:

Black Lake is located 4.8 miles from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park. It fills a deep cirque at treeline carved from the base of McHenrys Peak, The Arrowhead, Chiefs Head Peak, and The Spearhead.  If there is not a lot of snow we will be probably be taking our snow shoes on and off during portions of the hike due to rocky conditions.  Be sure to bring your micro spikes!!   IMPORTANT:  This hike past Mills lake to Black Lake will possibly be an adventuous and challenging hike.. PLEASE do not sign up if you are not up to the challenge of possibly breaking new trail and getting to the lake using nothing but GPS guidance.  That may be the only way we get there.  It may not be that bad, but I want you to be prepared for whatever trail conditions may or may not exist.  Thanks!!

EXTRAS:

Should bring emergency headlamp, snowshoes, micro spikes, hiking poles, extra warm gloves & clothing, protective eyewear in case of extreme wind exposure and blowing snow. Full face masks highly recommended. Hand and toe warmers are a very good idea!! Also bring extra water, and plan for what to do in case your Camel Back Water Tube freezes up. Bottled waters will freeze solid as well.

By signing up for this hike you acknowledge that you are solely responsible for your own safety and will do the necessary research to understand the conditions of this hike and the gear you will require.

APRES HIKE: (I need to buy another beer mug)

I would love to join in on this if there is an opening. I've been snowshoeing a lot, and I'm in good shape. i don't think I would have a problem, or slow anyone down. Thanks!

Krista, just a heads up on this one - heard the tree fall was pretty bad for a good stretch of the trail past Mills... I'll load the route, bring a 2nd GPS & don't mind breaking trail most of the way - it was fun doing so yesterday ;)

Thanks for the heads up.. From my research it looked like the trail would be kind of sketchy past Mills.. I am up for the challenge if you guys are.. We can switch off breaking trail and have multiple GPS's...should be fun..LOL :)
