Lower Crater Lakes through East Portal Trailhead

Crater Lakes - a cluster of 5 lakes spread about a rugged, isolated valley - offer excellent fishing and backcountry camping apart from the crowds. The East Portal Trailhead's well-maintained thoroughfare gives way to an ill-defined path to lower Crater Lakes, a scenic pair separated only by a thin, elevated ridge.

*Note, 8:00 is carpool leaving time!**
Round Trip Length: 6 miles
Elevation Change: ~1600'

For those interested in carpooling from Denver, plan to leave the 88th and Sheridan PNR (west side of Hwy 36, north end of the lot) at 8:00 a.m.

If not carpooling from Denver, meet at the East Portal Trailhead at 9:15am.

Bring snacks, water, snowshoes, extra layers, traction devices and hiking poles. Be prepared for all weather conditions, well, except maybe for typhoons and heat waves. Snow with a chance of falling gerbils is always a possibility.

By signing up for this hike you acknowledge that you are solely responsible for your own safety and will do the necessary research to understand the conditions of this hike and the gear you will require.

If we have 8 or less we can do the Savory Café in Nederland.  More than 8 and Jen has an alternative suggestion in Nederland.

Looking for a ride and carpool meetup is in opposite direction to where I live. I live right of 470 & kipling so could connect right off the exit by the Kohls or if coming from 70 could also meet off the Floyd Hill exit.
    Much Thanks bob

The limits for Indian Peaks is 12 humans, but I added three as I expect a few might drop before the actual hike. Please note, if you no-show, you only get 3 per year and then you are dropped from the group. We also count late cancellations (< 24 hours), although those do not create a drop. I use them to see whom I add from the waitlist.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
