Crater Lakes - a cluster of 5 lakes spread about a rugged, isolated valley - offer excellent fishing and backcountry camping apart from the crowds. The East Portal Trailhead's well-maintained thoroughfare gives way to an ill-defined path to lower Crater Lakes, a scenic pair separated only by a thin, elevated ridge.
*Note, 8:00 is carpool leaving time!**
Round Trip Length: 6 miles
Elevation Change: ~1600'
For those interested in carpooling from Denver, plan to leave the 88th and Sheridan PNR (west side of Hwy 36, north end of the lot) at 8:00 a.m.
If not carpooling from Denver, meet at the East Portal Trailhead at 9:15am.
Bring snacks, water, snowshoes, extra layers, traction devices and hiking poles. Be prepared for all weather conditions, well, except maybe for typhoons and heat waves. Snow with a chance of falling gerbils is always a possibility.

If we have 8 or less we can do the Savory Café in Nederland. More than 8 and Jen has an alternative suggestion in Nederland.
