Let's do Bergan Peak instead of three 13ers in a row

Change of Plans:

Due to conditions in the high country lets do a Bergan Peak rerun. It's a great hike and conditions should be good.

NO CARPOOL: We will meet at the trailhead. Everyone can organize their own car pooling.

Hike: Bergen Peak from Stagecoach Trailhead

9.3 miles round trip: Meadow View Trail to Bergen Peak Trail with return down Too Long Trail to make a loop.

Difficulty: Moderate

Elevation Gain: Approx. 1900 Feet

Note:  Please bring ice traction devices for this hike.  With the snow this week, we may encounter snow or ice.

DIRECTIONS:

Stagecoach Trailhead

32391 Stagecoach Boulevard, Evergreen CO 80439

1) Head SW on I-70W

2) Take exit 252 to merge onto CO-74 S/Evergreen Pkwy toward Evergreen Pkwy

3) Turn right onto Stagecoach Blvd

proceed 1.25 miles to the south parking lot on the right (ACROSS STREET FROM DOG PARK)

Apres Hike: Beau Jo's (unless I get overruled in favor of a local establishment.... )

It was a great hike, and I truly enjoyed meeting everyone. Looking forward to our next outing. I posted 29 pics but only tagged myself, because some people don't like to be tagged.

    Hi Gang!

Due to late season heavy snows on Loveland pass I am changing this hike to Bergan Peak in Evergreen. This means we will meet at the trailhead and *NOT* at the Wooly Mammoth parking lot. Please visit the Meetup for complete details.

Also, let me know that you got this message by replying to this email, texting me at[masked] or posting a comment on the Meetup.

I haven't heard from the other group so I don't know if they are still going to go for some hardcore 13er snowshoeing, but it is too much for me. I hope none is too disappointed.

    Thanks

    J P

Sorry, I don't know what the conditions are at Quandary. I would suspect they are similar.

I'll see you in the morning.

Hope we can reschedule this hike for July -- sounds like a great one!

    Hi Gang!

I am evaluating the weather conditions on Loveland Pass and the trails above. I called the ranger station and there has been quite a bit of snow in the last few days. I am not prepared to do a snowshoe hike at this altitude. This is a very strenuous hike in very good conditions. So, I am considering canceling this or changing to a hike at a lower (dryer) altitude.

Please feel free to chime in with thoughts and suggestions. In the mean time stay tuned for updates.

    Thanks

    J P

As I only have one snowshoe, I'd wind up going in circles. So, yea, I'm with you on not hiking in snow at 13k feet. Thanks for looking out and keeping us posted. Let us know what you decide.

Completely understandable - there's clearly quite a lot of snow everywhere. Alternatives I can think of off hand at a lower altitude:

Wild Basin - Sandbeach Lake - good view of Longs/Meeker
Wild Basin - Ouzel Lake (perhaps a little long) perhaps the falls - Superb views of Copeland

RMNP Sky Pond/Black Lake - Good views again of Longs from Mills Lake. Trails - compressed snow. Hikeable without snowshoes.

Avalanche is also an issue. You might consider skiing.

How are the conditions for snow? Just over the pass is A basin and I may stay over and ski Sunday.

Is anyone carpooling? I'd like to. And I'm assuming this hike is happening rain or shine (looking like rain)?

    May 7, 2013

    • Ian M.

I am coming from Boulder and can carpool. However, I have to be back in Boulder fairly early so I probably will not be able to stop in Georgetown on the way back.

      May 7, 2013

    • Jodi D.

We are planning to stop in Georgetown on the way back so we'll have to pass on carpooling with you - thanks for responding though! Anyone else want to carpool?

      May 7, 2013

Sorry I'm going to miss this one!

UGH! Work commitments are getting in the way... Sorry I'm going to have to back out and hopefully someone on the RSVP list can take advantage of this great hike! Have fun!

Carpooling: I live in Boulder and can take some people who need to be back in town by 5:30pm. Meeting at the Morrison Park & Ride or in Boulder.

Lovely idea Ian, I presume you are bringing the tea service and a large thermos of hot tea? then I could probably add some crumpets (or would that be Crumples?) to my pack to go with the tea..;-)

This is my first Trails & Ales hike! I'm headed to Machu Pichu a week after this, so I'm looking forward to getting in some good high altitude training!
