Hike Bluebird & Pipit Lakes in RMNP

  • June 23, 2013 · 6:30 AM

DISTANCE: 13.8 RT

SKILL LEVEL: STRENUOUS (This is not a beginner hike!)

Start-End Elevation: 8,500' to 11,420'

Net Elevation Change: +2,920'

CARPOOL: 6:30 is the Carpool time, NOT the Trailhead time!!

For those interested in carpooling from Denver, I suggest meeting at the 88th and Sheridan Park-n-Ride (west side of Hwy 36, north end of lot) at 6:20 and leaving no later than 6:32. I will not be at the carpool location, but will meet attendees at the trailhead.  We will leave the trailhead at 8:00.

DIRECTIONS:

From Boulder, take Highway 36 north 14 miles to the town of Lyons. Remain on 36 to the Highway 7 intersection. Turn left onto Highway 7 towards Allenspark. Remain on Highway 7 and look for the Wild Basin Trailhead entrance on the left (approximately 37 miles from Boulder). Turn left on the dirt road to the entrance station .15 miles ahead. The Wild Basin Trailhead is located 2.3 miles from the entrance station.

TRAIL RESTRICTIONS:

Dogs Allowed: NO

TRAIL DESCRIPTION:

Bluebird Lake is located 6.3 miles from the Wild Basin Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park.  It occupies a large, rocky bowl above treeline just east of the Continental Divide. Visitors will enjoy varied terrain, several waterfalls, access to Ouzel Lake and excellent fishing on the hike to Bluebird Lake.

The trail crests a few dozen yards over Bluebird Lake and scrambles down to the shore (6.3 miles : 10,978').

An unmarked and unmaintained route follows Bluebird Lake's inlet west to Lark Pond and Pipit Lake.  This is our end destination.  :)

EXTRAS:

Should bring layers, water & snacks...

Nothing but blue skies, and a real blue bird sighting en route to Bluebird Lake. Gorgeous day & Great company! Glad WE didn't encounter the numerous Bears that were seen on this trail today!

I hurt my knee last weekend hiking to Black Lake and I'm not sure if I will be able to keep up so I am going to cancel. Sorry for backing out fairly close to time of the trip. I just don't won't to hold people up on the hike. If it gets better and there is still a spot I will change my RSVP back.

Not sure how I feel about the possibility of so much snow. I'll join a RMNP hike later in the season. Have fun! :)

Can someone meet me at the Boulder Justice Center in the morning. This would be on the way and close to me since I live in Superior.

Thanks Anne and Alex. I'll check conditions next week and determine if this hike is doable or possibly look for an alternative hike. I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows of a relatively snow free trail in the park.

Also the Bridge is closed by Calypso Cascades. The detour around to BC campsites then onto BBLake adds milage, but doable (I did this a few weeks ago) Yesterday the ranger said they didn't know when it will reopen, and yes, lots of snow still :)

FYI - Visitor report at Thunder Lake (6/13), in the same quadrant of the park, but north of Bluebird, and Bluebird is tougher to get to:

"Great deal of snow last 1-2 miles with postholing. No visitor tracks evident. It can be hard to find trail. Snow depth up to 5 feet. Lake is still partially frozen. Those who choose to go should be experienced hikers familiar with the trail. Gaiters, poles, traction devices needed. Snowshoes would have been helpful."

I apologize that I have to remove myself as host for this hike... I am sure this will either be rescheduled for another day or another host/organizer will lead this hike. Thanks everyone! :)
