Tuesday Sunset and City Lights Hike -- Red Rocks/Morrison Slide

  • May 7, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Let's hike to the top of Morrison Slide and enjoy some snacks and beverages and the view from the mesa as the sun goes down and the city lights come on.

Where to Meet

Meet at the parking lot at the intersection of Red Rocks Trail Rd and W Alameda Pkwy at 6:45. Boots down at 7 p.m.

Trail

Red Rocks Trail and Morrison Slide Trail: We'll head up the Red Rocks Trail and take the loop section of this hike counterclockwise. So stay right at the fork with the first intersection with the Morrison Slide Trail, hike on the Red Rocks Trail till we hit the second intersection with the Morrison Slide Trail, follow it to the top of the mesa, enjoy the view, and continue on till it reunites with the Red Rocks Trail and the return to our cars.

Numerous switchbacks, city view

Distance: ~4 miles (my phone GPS and printed maps wildly disagree on the lengths of certain sections of this hike). If some of us are feeling ambitious, we can increase this to 6.
Elevation gain: ~600 ft
Peak elevation: 6,785

What you need
* Headlamp for the way down
* Your own snacks and beverages (or some to share, but no glass bottles)
* Capability to hike steep, rocky terrain at dusk/after dark
* Layers to put on as the evening chill sets in

Dogs must be on leash.

Apres-Hike

TBD: We'll gauge interest for further consumption

By signing up for this hike you acknowledge that you are solely responsible for your own safety and will do the necessary research to understand the conditions of this hike and the gear you will require.

Weather Channel currently shows dry conditions for the day. We should be good.

I am close by, but I will not be coming due to weather.

There are some visible showers about (no lightening that I've seen or thunder), but TWC says scattered T-storms and a 30% chance of precip. Given the exposure, I won't dock anyone for a no show. I'll show up, and if it takes a turn for the worse, we can go somewhere and grab a drink.

This is a strong maybe but I don't want you waiting for me if my meeting runs late.

Tania - I need to change my RSVP for a 'maybe'. I have a work commitment scheduled that has the potential to run late. Wish I knew more, but don't right now. - Cindy

Worried about slipping in the rain since I am recovering from ankle surgery. See you in drier times :)

Sorry - ran into work conflict

There's a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow evening. This is not a good place to be when there's lightening. So while I believe in braving the rain, I will keep an eye on the weather and cancel the hike if it looks like lightening for that time.
