Full on Buffalo Mountain

We’ll hike Buffalo Mountain (12,777’) outside of Siverthorne, CO. The views of the Gore Range and Dillon Reservoir are fantastic. The hike is just under 6 miles round-trip and 3100’ of elevation gain. We’re not planning on bringing snow shoes, but do bring traction devices for your boots (e.g. Micro Spikes) just in case. The pace will be moderately fast. After the hike, we’ll go to Beau Jo’s Pizza in Idaho Springs.

Originally, we planned on hiking Mt. Bierstadt, but because Guanella Pass is still closed and there’s still snow at the top, we decided to change it to Buffalo Mountain instead.

This is a moderately difficult hike, with a moderately fast pace.  Most of the hike is on-trail, but there will be some mild scrambling over boulders along the way. Safety of all hikers is our utmost priority.

Bring micro spikes and your ten essentials, including plenty of water.

Don't forget yummy snacks and drinks to enjoy at the top!

We will meet at the Wooly Mammoth Section G. Carpool at 6:15 am - We will leave lot by 6:30 am sharp - if you are not meeting at carpool please let me know ahead of time.

Please be considerate and do not cancel prior to 24 hours for any other hiker that might be interested to join the fun.

DISTANCE:  6 Miles Roundtrip

SKILL LEVEL: MODERATE TO STRENUOUS (This is not a beginner hike!)

Start-End Elevation: 9760'- 12,777'

Total Elevation Gain:  +3,100'

We're meeting at Wooly Mammoth at 6:15am and carpooling to the trailhead. To get to the trailhead, take I70 West to the Silverthorne/Dillon exit (#205). Exit right/north onto Hwy 9 about 0.1 miles to the first stoplight. Turn left onto Wildernest Road (a 7-11 is at the far left at the intersection). The road turns into Ryan Gulch Road--follow this for 3.5 miles. The parking for the trailhead (Buffalo Cabin Trail) is on the left/east as the road curves.

Dogs Allowed: Yes, but must be leashed at all times (no exceptions)!

Don't forget yummy snacks and drinks to enjoy at the top!
