Climb Pikes Peak-Crags Route

To members,

The votes are in and we will summit Pikes Peak via Crags Route. This is a 13.25 mile R/T with 4,300 ft of elevation gain and is a "class 2" hike. Here is a definition of class 2 for your review. This is taken from 14ers.com.

"More difficult hiking that may be off-trail. You may also have to put your hands down occasionally to keep your balance.  May include easy snow climbs or hiking on talus/scree."

This IS a solid hike that will require a non-hangover morning, proper hydration and food.

Here are the links to Crags TH and to Crags Campground.

http://www.14ers.com/routemain.php?route=pike1&peak=Pikes+Peak

http://campincolorado.com/federal/pike_san_isabel/the_crags/the%20crags.htm

Once we have our crew for this, we will determine if anyone wants to camp and who will meet at the trail head in the morning.

While I typically do not like to climb to a restaurant, the food and facilities might be a needed pit stop after 4300ft and 6 miles plus of hiking. And we get the look from the folks who drove up of "wow" they hiked that whole way:)

I suggest we meet at the Lincoln Park and Ride as it is right off of 1-25.

Very challenging but epic beauty. We had a near perfect day with the sunshine.

The Lincoln Station Park and Ride is NOT the one in Denver. This is right off of 1-25 in Lone Tree which is south of DTC a few miles. It is an easy one to find once you are off of 1-25.

Please lets start getting a count on who is going to the trail head and who is meeting at the park and ride.
    Thanks

Im just realizing this is supposed to be tomorrow? I was all in last week but that was canceled and I didn't know it would automatically RSVP me to this one. I'm actually in Breck to climb quandary tomorrow. Sorry folks

Take Crags Dirt road about 3-3.5 miles. You will see some kind of Menonite Campground first with a main house, take the fork to the right of that house and keep going to the very end of the road where you will see a big parking lot with Restroom facilities next to the Trailhead.

The Crags Dirt road on Hwy 67 South of Divide is on your left about half mile after you see the Mueller State Park entrance on your right.

Tom...I decided to go for it! and make the PP hike on Sunday.

I'm still a little 'coughy' but figure I should be little less contagious by Sunday if I sleep well enough.

I'm going to go ahead and sleep in the back of my pickup at the Trailhead. I think I need to catch a couple more hours of sleep than everybody else just so I'm not doggin it with a nasty cough all the way up there and back.

Please send me a quick note on your current fitness level and hiking at altitude.

I want to emphasize to all that this is not a 14er for those who have never hiked a 14er before. There is a 4000ft elevation gain and a 6.75 mile stretch 1 way. This is approximately twice the elevation gain and twice the distance of Bierstadt. This is not a 14er for beginners. This is a moderate level 14er.

If you have not hiked a 14er recently and have not hiked at least 10 miles Round Trip hike this year then you should reconsider this hike unless you are very confident in your physical stamina and endurance.

On a lighter note, I heard that they will serve you a free doughnut (and maybe coffee) if you reach the restaurant at the top and of course proclaim you hiked up...no kidding. I'm not sure how you prove that to them other than you look like you hiked it! At least last year that was the rumor. I just about got up there last year but got turned around by a snow storm. That's why I'm hot to do it again this year.

    • Nandi

Hmmm I wish I had known about the free doughnut before. Last time I hiked all the way on Barr Trail and bought my own doughnut! :)

      September 27, 2013

    • Tom

Doughnuts? hmm. I rather my sugar come in the form of a beer.

Taken from 14er.com. This is the summit forecast. Please give thought with regard to your clothing and layers and spare stuff.

Sunny, with a high near 41. Breezy, with a west northwest wind 10 to 20 mph becoming south southwest in the afternoon.

If any recent RSVPs have not sent me their hiking at altitude ability, please do so by tonight ideally or mid day on Friday

    HI Tom, All,
I completely understand the decision to postpone.
Unfortunately for me but fortunately for a fellow hiker I can not make the 29th due to a prior plan to be in North Carolina hence I have changed my RSVP to no.

    Cheers
    Martin

Martin I am sorry as well as we all enjoyed your presence at Bierstadt.

9/21/13- 8:36am With much sadness I have decided with consultation with a trusted co-leader to cancel this hike for tomorrow. I have reviewed 3 weather forecasts and there is a high probability for snow and rain and possibly strong winds. The joy of the magnificent views is highly likely gone so I will be rescheduling.
It was a tough call but it would be a socked in visibility hike quite possibly so lets bag this thing on a better day.
Please email me with any questions.

I'm seriously thinking about joining the hike but want to meet up with the group at the Crags Trailhead rather than the Lincoln Park and Ride If anyone can help me with the ETA (estmated time of arrival) at the Trailhead, please call me at[masked]

I plan to arrive at the Crags TH late Saturday afternoon and sleep in the back of my pickup that night. I will likely bring my little gas grill for some grillin and some firewood if there's a place for a fire around there. Others are welcome to join me. Let me know if you're interested.

    Right on!
I'm training for Everest Basecamp in Nov. ...and I love Bristol!

I'll probably camp out the night before so that I don't have to make the drive at 330am!

Hey...check out my blog too www.beersnobchick.com

You are getting after Everest Base camp? I am soo behind:(

      1 · August 26, 2013

    • Abbas

I met couple of hikers at Barr Camp on my way up to PP this past Saturday who are going to Everest Base camp on Oct 31.
Whats inspiring is that they live in Overland park, KS and they fly to CO on weekends to hike to get acclimated to altitude...that speaks for their commitment.
