THE TRAIL:

Difficulty level - Moderate Plus

Trail Length 9.4 miles round trip: Meadow View Trail to Bergen Peak Trail and Bergen Peak

Trail Time Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours

From the wooded, rather flat summit of Bergen Peak the views are somewhat obscured due to the trees, however from a vantage point just south of the actual summit there are nice views in all directions except the north. From this rocky view point you can see the peaks of the Mt. Evans massif, including Epaulet Mountain, Spalding Mountain, Mount Warren and Mount Evans as well as Chief and Squaw Mountains to the west. To the south Thunder Butte can be seem and Pikes Peak rears it head in the far distance. Mount Morrison, Denver and the plains can be seen to the east.

On the trail to Bergen's summit, which comes up from the east, then circles around to the north and finally up the western side of Bergen Peak, there is at least one spot were there is a view off to the north of Longs Peak and the peaks of both the Indian Peaks and James Peak Wilderness areas.Elk Meadows and the eastern slopes of Bergen Peak consist of open grasslands and meadows at the lower, less steep elevations. Higher elevations include open ponderosa pine forests where elk and deer can be found. Higher yet, on the steeper slopes are dense forests of douglas fir and scattered aspen groves. And in the highest elevations the slopes are dominated by lodge pole pine

I was there at 10:45 and waited in the lot but, didn't see a group, or anyone really, waiting or meeting at the trailhead. Shortly after 11:00 I decided to head up the trail in case I somehow missed you all ... never saw a group of people and maybe I walked right by some of you. I was with a yellow lab, in case you did happen to notice him. Bummer. Nice hike though.

Sorry Katie -- Steve, Courtney and I were there by 10:45 and started hiking about ten to 11. We didn't see you. We missed seeing Dennis as well. Given the number of drops and that I wasn't sure where you two were planning to meet us (I was assuming the carpool location) I figured you were no-shows.

I'm in a white PT Cruiser in the DD section. Going to get some coffee if you see my car and I'm not back across the street yet.

Russ, I'd encourage you to not push it. I'm betting that we end up hiking all or a good part of the way in snow -- better to be safe than for us to need to carry you out! Hope you're all healed up soon!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
