Trail run... this is an uncommon one because it's a challenge — I do it a lot but have never put it on the calendar. I'll be running, but if there's a walker who is familiar with this trail, you may lead any walkers (dogs will enjoy this HUGELY for a walk — and spots for s-w-i-m but probably not best to run it as a dog).
SO... as per my usual, we'll be going LOW AND SLOW. As you can see from the map link below, a considerable amount of this trail is waterfront. Part of it is fire road and a good distance is single-track. I do recommend trail running shoes (hikers if you're walking), but that's a personal equipment decision.
Heat: While it will be much cooler in the woods, if you have a furry animal, figure he/she feels the temperature as being about 10 degrees hotter than we do (according to my vet and my dog concurs but swears it's 20-degrees not 10). This 3-4 miler is a challenging run. There's about .6 to .7 (total combined) of fairly (and some very) aggressive ascent. Walking at times is toh-hoooo-tally fine and encouraged. It's a loop and we'll run it "the easy way". (Clockwise.)
Hydration (of the non-alcoholic variety): if you elect to bring a dog, PLEASE bring hydration for your animal. They can drink from the reservoir, but it's best to have some handy. I will be running with hydration for myself for sure, even though it's a fairly short run. (It takes a while, though, because it's a hilly one!)
map shows you how to get there AND the whole main trail system accessible from this location in a purple highlighter. We are NOT doing all of this mileage! (This map is for mountain bikers... who have WHEELS! --- those cheaters, LOL!) http://www.trailfu.com/mountain-bike/maryland/baltimore/lock-raven-providence-road/Default.aspx
Directions: North on Providence Road. Pass the firehouse on the left. Across from Dogwood Lane (way up on the left) is a long solid wood fence where folks park on the road shoulder. If you pass Lakecrest Ct (on the right) and you start to enter the woods and hit Loch Raven Road you have gone too far. Turn around and find Dogwood and the fence.
Meeting Up: I will park along the fence or that bit of shoulder near it and will wait until 6:45 and then head out! Your cue: just look like you're looking for someone.
Please by all means suggest an apres-run watering hole for a beer!
