Easy ++ at times moderate bicycle ride from the South Sound Mall in Lacey, WA (easy access from I-5) on the old paved railroad trails to the waters of Puget Sound on Woodard Bay. Eat a brown bag lunch, take pictures and rest before returning to the mall. The return trip is the moderate part, as it is a slight, slight upgrade back.
Join our group as we bike from South Sound Center on the Chehalis Western Trail to the Woodard Bay Natural Area. There is a total (round trip) of 12 miles of bicycling and 1 mile of hiking.
From South Sound Center we will bicycle North 6 miles on the Chehalis Western Trail toward Woodard Bay. This bike trail crosses South Bay Road and a few other secondary county roads. Use caution. The Chehalis Western Trail terminates on the east side of Woodard Bay. Continue bicycling on Woodard Bay Road (use caution—there is no shoulder) down a short hill and cross the Bay to the west side. Park your bike at the bike rack and start the hiking section of this event, hiking the remaining ½ mile to Woodard Bay.
**Remember to pack a lunch.
This will be a good beginning ride. Time to work out the kinks in your back and bicycle. It will also prepare us for longer rides later in September and October. We will be planning a 20+ mile trip to Rainier. And a 30 mile trip in Orting. All paved trail rides. No open roads.
