Inaugural Treehouse DC Meetup

UPDATE: Remember to bring your business cards for the raffle! See you all soon!

UPDATE: Swag has arrived! We'll be raffling off these t-shirts, books, and stickers next week.

UPDATE: Some folks have asked us if this is an official Treehouse meetup. Treehouse asked us to put this event together after we inquired about local meetups or other get togethers of Treehouse users. Treehouse is providing our food/drinks budget and they'll be sending along some swag, so I guess it's pretty official.

Also, Treehouse is giving us codes for free memberships (I believe for a free month of use) for both new and existing members.

At this first meetup we're going to get to know each other over lots of food and drinks and try to figure out what Treehouse DC should be all about.

How can we use regular meetups to turn learning via Treehouse, which can be a lonely activity, into something social?

Should future meetups be organized around topics?

Should we keep things informal and just bring our projects and work with each other on an ad hoc basis?

Bring your best ideas and hopefully we can reach a consensus or at least agree to try a few approaches at future meetups.

Didn't direct you to a valid page or gave you an error? Under the title it says in fine hard to see print "Get Your First Month 100% Off! Limited Time Only. No Contracts."

I recommend using this for free then googling up a 4 month free if you sign up for a year deal. That way you spend under $200 for the whole year

Excellently, random, and interesting group of people for the initial Meetup. We chatted about topics all over the place, but definitely centered on learning and how we like to learn, not to mention what to learn first. I will be recommending this to my friends, people I know looking for a learning community. I hope everyone keeps coming back for each monthly Meetup.

Notes from our discussion: We had a couple of people interested in a Ruby bootcamp, and it was mentioned that the DC Rails Girls meetup has some coed events that are good for beginners. We also discussed how / whether the Treehouse meetup can be useful, considering that there are so many meetups in DC focused on particular technologies (PHP, jQuery, Ruby) - perhaps as a more newbie focused group that could help direct people to local meetups or other resources (including Treehouse), or perhaps something where people on the same track on Treehouse can share ideas. It seemed like a key question to answer is why come to the Treehouse meetup rather than to a meetup for a specific technology. We also discussed how Treehouse compared to Code Academy and other sites such as code.org.

You should put this in the main post, I wouldn't know to print out a business card if I had not read the comments.

You don't need to bring anything, but if you like you could check out Treehouse and learn a bit about the courses it offers. Come with questions and hopefully we can learn from each other.

We've got a set budget for the event, so depending on the attendance, our spending per person could range from the extravagant to the miserly. As we get closer to the date of the meetup and have a solid idea about headcount, we'll let folks know if we need help bolstering the amount of food or drink or anything else.

If anyone has any questions or suggestions for us, please share them here. This is a first for both me and Stan, so we'd appreciate the wisdom of the Meetup community being shared.
