We last visited Dogtown in September of 2012 so it's time for a return visit. We will explore mostly areas that we did not see last time, so if you joined us on our previous visit, please come again! If you are new to Dogtown this should prove to be a fascinating introduction for you
We are pleased to welcome back as our guide the resident expert on Dogtown, and author of "The Dogtown Guide", Dr. Mark Carlotto.
This time around, Dr. Carlotto will take us "Bushwhacking" through this peculiar abandoned settlement, or "ghost town", in Gloucester, MA. We'll stop along the way to hear history of the area at sites not usually seen by explorers on their own. We'll visit a well preserved cellar and see several stone walls assembled by the original inhabitants of DogTown. We will also stop at the famous "Whale's Jaw"
Bushwhacking, for those of you not familiar with the term, describes going "off trail"- we will experience heavy brush and may encounter pricker bushes and other natural obstacles that might damage clothing, so dress appropriately!
COST for this guided tour is $15 per person, and includes a copy of "The Dogtown Guide".
If you already have the book or do not wish to own it, cost for guide services only is $10 per person.
What to Bring:
Dogtown is extremely rocky and uneven, so hiking boots with ankle support are highly recommended. Hats are suggested, bring along some bugspray just in case. Water is recommended, something to munch on during your hike is also a good idea. As mentioned above, due to the off trail nature of this particular event, please wear clothing that is not of extreme value to you as you may cut and or damage clothing. Don't forget your camera!
From the Organizer Team
There is a suggested voluntary donation of $2 per person to help cover the administrative fees of this Meetup page, and can be made the morning of the hike.
We'll explore Dogtown for approximately 2 1/2 hours and then head
to The Lobster Pool for a BYOB lunch.
Address for The Lobster Pool: 329 Granite Street, Rockport, MA
Depending on total number of RSVP's we may meet at a nearby school and carpool to Dogtown due to limited parking there.
Rain Date for this event is 4/6
Please be courteous when RSVP'ing to this event- if your plans change and you can't make it be sure to change your RSVP to "No". Trekking Gourmets has a strict "3 strikes and your out "no show policy.
We had a blast last time- hope you'll join us as The Trekking Gourmets RETURN TO DOGTOWN!
