MOVED - Mount Wachusett Moonlight Hike and Mountainside Party

Update 2, 25 Jan - OK, I'm not going to dither any more.  I'm postponing this another month due to the extreme cold.  I'm sorry to make that call but it seems the best thing to do from here.  In the next couple of days I'll post a follow-on date.  Sorry folks.

Update: Folks, I hate to do this two months running, but I'm inclined to postpone once again.  I've been watching the temps this week and am not too keen on what I'm seeing.  The forecast for tomorrow night is a temp of about 14 degrees with a wind chill feel of 1 degree.  I'm inclined to think this is too cold and borders on dangerous to be on the mountain since it's pretty extreme for us New Englanders.  Does anyone have a different view?

UPDATE:  The weather for the original date didn't cooperate, unless you call 8 inches of new powder cooperation.  Great for skiers, not so much moonlight hikers.  This new date is confirmed.

Come join your favorite MeetUp group for the last event of 2012, our most successful, active, and fun year yet!

Hike Mount Wachusett by the light of the full moon and enjoy a party on the mountain. Every participant needs to bring something to eat and/or drink to share with the group around the hearth. After the hike, mosey on down to the ski area lodge for a drink.

Some additional info:

This counts as a winter hike, so dress in layers, bring an extra coat for when you're stopped at the top, and NO COTTON!

Microspikes are highly recommended as the ice on the summit road can be treacherous, to say nothing of the trail itself.  Bring a headlamp, too.  You probably won't need it for the hike, but it makes it a lot easier to get goodies out of your rucksack.

We'll meet at the visitor center, then carpool down to Mountain House trail, about a mile up the road.  We'll hike that trail, have our party at a stop on the summit road, then continue down the road back to the visitor center, then go pick up the cars from the Mountain House trailhead.

Key point - Bring something to share!  Wine and cheese are always welcome but be as creative as you like to expand the menu.  Any mead brewers out there?

Dogs welcome, as long as they get along with other dogs.

PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF YOUR FELLOW TREKKERS WHEN RSVP'ING YES! Since this event is limited, be sure you can make it, or change your RSVP to NO if your plans change. Remember, "No-Shows" are highly frowned upon and will be tallied, anyone who has 3 "No-Shows" will be removed from The Trekking Gourmets.

Please note this event is weather dependant, final notes will be emailed to all yes RSVP's a day or two in advance.

Looking forward to Trekking In The Moonlight with you!

Hi Shawn, I just wanted to know if my husband and I would be able to go. I've been on the Waitlist for a while and saw that there was a spot open before RSVPs closed. I only ask because I live in Londonderry, NH and reserved a hotel for tomorrow night. Thank you!

Oh darn! I really did want to attend this event, but b/c of wait list I made alternate plans for this Saturday. I will go ahead and remove myself from the list. I look forward to trekking in the future!

Hello, folks! Weather update here. It's looking like we will have a proper winter hike on our hands on Saturday evening!

With the snow and rain expected tonight followed by freezing temperatures on Friday, the trail and summit road will be very icy, so I'm inclined to make traction devices mandatory. Please make sure you have Microspikes, Yak Trax or the like. I'm keeping a watching brief on the weather. If it is snowing at the time, or travel to and from the mountain could be treacherous, I'll cancel for safety sake but, outside of that, we should be going. The forecast right now shows a 50% chance of snow showers on Sat afternoon/night. I'll make a final call by email no later than Friday evening.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

That's not a problem, Mary. We cross the slopes judiciously and, over the last couple of years, have never had an issue.

I think I see a hiccup in your plan....the vehicle downroad is closed for the winter as it goes over the ski slopes. You are not able/allowed to walk on the slopes.
