Space... It's Closer Than You ThinkŪ brought to you by 62MileClub

A series of conversations and networking regarding the upcoming renaissance in the space industry.

Participation in this group is open to:

- Non-space Professionals and Entrepreneurs who would like to learn more about what is 'New Space.'*
&
- Space industry professionals of all types.

On October 4, 2004 a private group led by aerospace engineer Burt Rutan with financial support by Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft) completed a series of flights sending a person to space as a part of the Ansari XPRIZE competition. This win is one part of a larger dream of sending people and cargo to space outside of a government controlled infrastructure. Naysayers said it the effort would be impossible but the visionaries didn't sway in their plans to make space more accessible.

Instead of thinking space as only a destination, we can begin by thinking about space as an enabler. Space allows us to live our dreams, make our lives better here on earth, and create new, almost unimaginable paths for humanity. We are not so much as in a race to space, but on the edge of an era when people like you and me will be able to participate and benefit.

You might not even realize it, but we are already on the path to making humans a truly space faring people. This nascent industry will be one that reshapes humanity. The Internet gave the world access to information and New Space could give us access to the universe. Yes, these are lofty dreams and there are some incredible visionaries at work to make it a reality.

Our goal is to both share our passion with you and for you to be part of the adventure today.

Below is a list of several 'New Space' companies who today are dream builders and have founders whose names you might recognize. There are other organizations and individuals doing equally compelling work without more recognizable names attached to them.

Blue Orgin: Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com
Virgin Galactic: Sir Richard Branson of Virgin, Inc.
Space Exploration Technologies (i.e. SpaceX): Founded by Elon Musk of PayPal, Telsa, and Solar City

Last week, the White House announced that it was going to steer NASA in a new direction that would involve more of the private sector. New space is the term for Entrepreneurial oriented space endeavors that are not solely dependent on government backing. Characteristics of New Space firms include but are not limited to low cost focus, incremental development, consumer markets, and capabilities of taking people to space.

We are potentially at the start of a paradigm shift where the cost of access to space could be decreased as a number of new firms providing access to space increases. Although on first glance, space can seem like a narrow topic to explore, but there are other areas are peripheral areas which we could explore in these series of ongoing conversations.
