The goal of the book club is to have open discussions of African American books. Members will have an opportunity to show their love of reading through discussion:
Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones. It is sure to stir up a lot of feelings around love, family, familial conflict and relationships so we hope you'll join us. This should be a provocative read and discussion, that's for sure.
Just to make sure we have enough time for everyone to get the book and read it, let's meet-up 2/4 with the intention that everyone will have a copy. Then we can come up with a date to discuss.
FYI: Please feel more than welcomed to suggest future selections for the next Book Club Meetup. We'll discuss our next selection and how often we would like to this event 2/4 at Atlanta Bread Company.
Here's review of the book.
It's a coming-of-age story of sorts, chronicling the not-quite-parallel lives of Dana Lynn Yarboro and Bunny Chaurisse Witherspoon in 1980s Atlanta. Both girls-born four months apart-are the daughters of James Witherspoon, a secret bigamist, but only Dana and her mother, Gwen, are aware of his double life. This, Dana surmises, confers "one peculiar advantage" to her and Gwen over James's other family, with whom he lives full time, though such knowledge is small comfort in the face of all their disadvantages. Perpetually feeling second best, 15-year-old Dana takes up with an older boy whose treatment of her only confirms her worst expectations about men. Meanwhile, Chaurisse enjoys the easy, uncomplicated comforts of family, and though James has done his utmost to ensure his daughters' paths never cross, the girls, of course, meet, and their friendship sets their worlds toward inevitable (and predictable) collision. Set on its forced trajectory, the novel piles revelation on revelation, growing increasingly histrionic and less believable. For all its concern with the mysteries of the human heart, the book has little to say about the vagaries of what motivates us to love and lie and betray.

Hello, should we have the entire book read by Feb 4 or up to certain chapter for the discussion?
I ended up downloading the audio book. I'm loving this book. It was a great choice.
I was trying to hold off from reading until our meeting on the 4th. But now I'm starting!
I think the first two chapters and it will give everyone a chance to get a copy or download the book. Then we can discuss how often we want to meet and etc....
Thank You to everyone that attended!!! The next Book Discussion will be March 3, 2012 @ 6pm. I will post the readers guide questions ASAP.
