Sunset / Full moon Hike and Picnic at Coyote Hills

  • Jun 22, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Enjoy a Saturday evening hike to view the full moon rise over the eastern mountains - followed by a colorful sunset from our picnic table on Red Hill.  Feel free to bring a sandwich / snack / "etc" to make it an enjoyable outdoor dining experience.

Some climbing involved - not much elevation gain (~300'), but a few steep sections.  About 4 miles.  2 to 2.5 hours with breaks.

We will meet in the parking area at the intersection of Patterson Ranch Road and Paseo Padre Pky. (See the map in the "More -> Files" section).

Thanks Auri for helping set this up - including the hike description as well as the pre-hike organizational details.

You're welcome Jake. I appreciate your starting this meetup group and keeping it going for over 4 years now ... Kudos!

Some of the best seats in the house (well, the Bay Area!) to enjoy both the (celestial) shows! Good turnout, glacial arctic winds (er... OK, stronger than usual winds!), but thankfully, beautiful clear skies.

The trip was great! I got just enough work out, and meeting new friends. Not mention the moon rise was awesome!

Sorry, guys, I missed out. I got lost. There were police activities on Thornton, so I took cedar instead of the usual Newark and the rest is history.

Even though it was a little cool and windy on top, the weather worked out well for us because by the time I got home the moon was starting to become obscured by clouds. Within 30 minutes the sky was completely cloudy and it will most likely be cloudy Sunday evening.

Thanks; that was great .... I also wondered if you wanted us to wait upon return to the cars for the group to get back in entirety ... my apologies that I went ahead and headed for home - I'll check with you next time on that protocol. Great Moon ! :-)

No worries - the only protocol is to enjoy the hike :)

Wonderful group of people. The hike and the evening watching the sun set and the moon rise were astonishing!
Thank you Jake for organizing this hike!!

    Hi All,

There is a chance that the parking lot will fill up - being a weekend and all the talk about the Supermoon! If you are new to this park, note this is the dirt lot outside the park - if you reach the entrance gate / pay station, turn around. Come a little early, say 6:45pm so we can get going as close to 7pm as possible ... that way, we can enjoy some Bay views and be on top of the hills by the time the moon comes up. And don't forget to BYOD/S/B ... and a jacket to keep warm after the sun sets. See you all!

Thanks Linda for the update. Folks, if your plans change, please update your RSVP so we know whether to look for you before we start. If you are late, just head for Red Hill (ask a park staff or other visitors) and you should be able to catch up with us as we spend some time up there (and the adjacent hill with the picnic bench.) Be sure to bring layers - it will get cool quickly as the sun sets on the bay

Wow, this sounds like a nice idea....I work that day till 4ish pm in Manteca and it will be easy to drive to our meeting place for hike. The only down side is I have dog at home and he will remain inside till I get back home from hike to Merced where I live and he will be very uncomfortable all day. Any suggestions? Are dogs allowed on this trail?

    Please let me know.

    Thank you~

Always hike coyote hills solo but I'm excited to go with people for a change.

I am going to be in SF all day (volunteer work) and I think a hike will be too much for one day. I hope to see you soon. Marguerite
