Hidden Canyons of Lake Chabot

  • June 30, 2013 · 5:15 PM

Enjoy a ~6 mile walk enjoying some of the shaded, tree-covered (and hopefully, cool!) canyons and scenic waterfront trails at Lake Chabot.   It's predicted to be a warm day - but by 6pm, temps should have fallen from the highs of the day.

Elevation: ~500'.   ~3 hours with stops / breaks to enjoy the views & scenery.  [Note:
Slow / moderate pace. Not a fast or exercise hike.  You burn the same calories, btw!]

We'll start from a lesser known
parking area - not far from the main entrance. Directions will be e-mailed to attendees.

In case you were curious, here is some interesting info. on the Soaproot plant - those miniature white lilies we saw on the trail. http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/chlorogalum_pomeridianum.shtml

And here's a page on Tule - those clusters of long green stemmed plants (bulrushes) we saw in+around the lake.

To anyone who hasn't been there before, it is a beautiful preserve ... with a large lake surrounded by forested hills. It's quite a large lake ... the trail around it is 9 miles! And like other nature preserves in the Bay Area, once you enter the park, you feel you are in an oasis far removed from urban areas.
