Pick Up & Paddle

Here is the plan:
After speaking with a few members, there seems to be an interest to paddle and do a little community service. We will meet up the last Thursday of each month at the New Richmond Kayak Ramp to splash around the Mighty Ohio. (It looks as though the river will be up some on the 25th, so let’s move Aprils paddle to May 2nd).

The idea is to meet an hour before push off time to police the area around the landing/ramp, and pick up any flotsam that may have found a home from the rise and fall of the river. Some supplies will be provided. My hope is the Tri-State Kayakers will adopt the ramp and help the village keep the ramp squared away till some grant $$ can be awarded next year.

Working on other details and more information will follow.

When – May[masked], and then hopefully the last Thursday of each month.

Time - Clean up starts at 5:30, in the water by 6:45.

Where – The New Richmond canoe/kayak ramp, which is located next to The Landing Restaurant at the corner of Front and Quarry Sts. GPS: N[masked] x W084 17.092.

Experience - You should have paddling experience for this paddle, as it may be getting dark as we paddle back to the landing. Be sure to bring your NAV light, and please note this reminder:

Vessels under Oars
(OAC[masked])
“A vessel under oars... shall have an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light in sufficient time to prevent collision.” One that is visible for 360 degrees is best! Remember, your butt is on the water with the highest point being the top of your head. Boaters approaching from astern can’t see your headlamp! Making yourself as visible as possible is THE LAW & YOUR RESPONABILTY!

Pre-Paddle - Everyone is responsible for their own grub and fluids.
What To Bring - Yak / PFD - life vest (must be securely worn and fully buckled) / warm weather clothing / water / bug spray / lights/camera. Come on, you know what you need, we’re adults here!

The Green Kayak Market at 204 Front St. New Richmond has kayaks for rent. Check their web site at www.greenkayakmarket.com or call Chris at[masked] for more details.

Restrooms - Restroom close by.

A near perfect night to be on the water. The current was a little strong but water was like glass, cool evening and nice sunset!

JUST RECEIVED THIS FROM JIM COMODECA, OWNER OF THE GREEN KAYAK MARKET:
This is so great. I will make every effort to get back in town to stop down. Once the GK is open on Thursday nights, Chris wants to invite folks down after the regular last Thursday clean up (assuming such is a go) for 10% off all food items. We will also work on creating a drink special for the same event. Finally, if the group is in for the regular "Last Thursday" tidy and paddle, we will make sure to get such announcement up on our sight and help publicize. I can't thank you and the others for all the help on keeping this Project on course and viable. I really hope we have success with Grant money into next year to improve the site even more. jim

    WOW, OUR OWN DRINK!!! 8~)

As of 3pm the river is at 29.69ft. according to the gauge in Cincinnati.
The flow rate May be a little high for beginniers. I am going to be there, we are still on and we'll have to eyeball the water. If I am not mistaken, the flow rate is determined by the depth and width of the river at the point of observation.

We can get so work done and if we don't get on the water the first 2 buckets of beer at the Landing are on ME! Now where can you go and get a better offer than that on a Thursday night??

Rivers Unlimited http://www.riversunlimited.org/index.html is letting us borrow some clean up gear. Shovels, gloves and litter tongs so the gals won't chip a nail. 8~) Ray from the cardboard boat museum, donated plastic bags.

Bring rakes if you want. Not too much man made litter, more in the way of drift wood.

I'll be there by 5 with water for all.

Still working on the bon fire, Jim from GKM may be doing the honors!

The river will be UP around three feet over normal pool, but looks to be fairly clear of debris. As long as the water doesn’t look to be moving too fast we should be good to go. Updates to follow!

    Update:

Checked the landing area last night....not too much in the way of man made junk. Some drift wood to pile up, haven't gotten the OK to burn anything yet. Hope to pick up a donation of trash bags, gloves, shovels, and litter tongs in the next day or so. River is about down to normal pool.

    Stay tuned

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
