Ohio River Sunrise Urban Float for Paddlefest

Some stations will start broadcasting live at 5 AM so I am getting there early at 4:45 AM. You can actually come anytime after 4:45 AM but the main meeting time is still 5:45 AM.

Weather, river level and media attendance are all looking GORGEOUS for Thursday morning. The event is on!!!

What is going on? We will push off from the Covington, Ky, shoreline at the old Mike Fink Parking Lot at 5:30 AM sharp and leisurely cruise the downtown riverfront area and watch the sun come up at 6:05.  This is also an opportunity for local media to broadcast live for an opening story for Paddlefest. Therefore, we may be doing circles in the river for a while. We will probably then paddle up near the Dayton, Ky area depending on the wants of the group. You can return to the put-in point at any time if you need to leave early.

How and when to get there. I recommend to get there at 5:15 AM to unload and set up at the old Mike Fink Restaurant Parking lot in Covington, Ky, located immediately to the East of the Roebling Suspension Bridge. Get on Greenup street in Covington and go north staying in the extreme right lane and follow it down to the river bank then go down a steep paved driveway to the right. Go to the far end of the parking lot. BE CAREFUL OF THE BOAT MOORING CABLES which are sometimes suspended off the ground at the far East end. We will depart and arrive at the same location so no vehicle shuttling is needed. My number is[masked] if you need to call me.

Safety Concerns. You will need at least one white light for either your boat or worn on your person, such as a camping headlight. There will be a mandatory safety briefing as a group as we put in at the shoreline.  If you are not there for the safety briefing, you are not considered a part of the group. If you separate from the group while on the river, you assume all responsibility for watching out for other powered boat traffic. Especially at the mouth of the Licking River where barge traffic operates at all times of day.

Last year's media coverage

Tomorrow morning, 20 June, please bring your kayak down to the old Mike Fink parking lot just East of the Roebling Suspension Bridge in Covington, Ky, at 5:45 AM to paddle in Paddlefest 2013. There will be heavy local media coverage with several channels broadcasting live for their morning shows. We'll be paddling in circles until the media get their footage. Below is last year's event.

No offense drjanet, but apparently you have decided for us that this is a flat water encouragement event only- I look at it more broadly - to get people interested in kayaking, to get their feet wet as it were. Most people start on flat water before they even think about rolls or whitewater. They then see things like that roll and maybe get curious and learn about whitewater. I never heard anyone express fear of kayaking bc they see a roll in a short boat.

Please, please, please don't encourage someone to show off an eskimo roll for the cameras. It is NOT representative of flat water paddling on the Ohio or Paddlefest in general. It TOTALLY turns off novices to flat water kayaking. Do it for publicity for a Gauley run or a sea kayaking adventure but not this, please.

To continue, what I'm saying is that Paddlefest is a recreational paddling event. The goal is to attract folks to try Paddlefest and to demonstrate the accessibility of flat water kayaking, not to show off technique or expensive equipment. As Outreach Coordinator for Team River Runner I am CONSTANTLY told of fears of the water and seeing a roll in the Ohio river fuels that excuse from would-be kayakers. If its absolutely necessary to "spice up" the news clip, wouldn't it be more appropriate to show a flat water assisted rescue with someone demonstrating a graceful self entry? Stress the stability, ease, safety, and fun of flat water paddling, please!

All rescue techniques are important. Next year why not demonstrate flatwater and rolling. I think it would generate interest and perhaps alleviate fears. It might also motivate some to expand their skills. There were several whitewater boats and many sea kayaks today. Why not represent all forms of paddling?

It was great! Weather was beautiful and the river was calm. However, felt bad for the Channel 19 reporters who tipped in the river.

Once again, a great event! I agree with the rough and rocky comment, but aside from that, it was fantastic! Great weather, super nice paddlers! Thanks to all who had a hand in organizing! Wonderful job!

I'm off that day, so I'm going to try to make it. This is the trip where I got the "big owie" last year and had to miss Paddlefest. That's not going to happen this year.

    June 17, 2013

  • Lynette J.

Elizabeth, you should be fine! Last year my girlfriends and I were out, loaded and sitting at First Watch by 9!

    • Larry

Just like last year, I can do it!

      June 16, 2013

I agree, with Janet's comment regarding the Eskimo roll.

    June 16, 2013

Are we going straight from here to Coney Island lake Como?

    1 · June 15, 2013
