Cowan Lake - Lotus Blossoms Sun 7/28/13

Lotus Blossoms Are Blooming!

Cowan Lake

1st Place Nature Category 2012 TSK Photo Contest

Where – Cowan Lake State Park at the public beach. You'll come in on SR 350 and turn left onto Yankee Road. Follow the signs to the beach parking lot. Here's the link to the park map: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Portals/2/parkmaps/cowanlakeparkmap.pdf

When – Expect to arrive at 8:45 (or earlier) and launch at about 9:00 AM (to beat the heat).

Number of Attendees The ideal group size is about 12 kayakers, so if we balloon up in numbers, we'll separate into two groups. One group will head across the lake to the north shore patch while the other group will head east to the boat-ramp patch and feeder stream. We'll pass each other along the north shore with everyone having the best possible experience and meet up again at the beach.

What To Bring – PFD / sun hat / camera / warm weather clothing / water / snacks / sun screen...and your cameras

Restrooms – At the public beach and at the swimming beach near the north shore patch.

Weather Forecast – I'll watch the weather and provide updates as needed / Go – No Go email to attendees within 24 hours or the night before.

Experience – Suitable for beginners / flat water / no power boats / about three hours of easy paddling

Post-Paddle Sustenance – Way back yonder on SR 350 at I-71 is a great truck stop type restaurant with a strong local following. In other words, the grub is really good...especially the anytime-breakfast.

Liability Waiver – As always, by joining in this event you are acknowledging that you have read and agree to abide by the Tri-State Kaykers liability waiver. You can find this waiver in the Files section of the Tri-State Kayakers web site

With heat and early blooming, the lotus blossom season this year could be  short. Make the pilgrimage to Cowan Lake
You'll thank yourself many times over.

Great paddle on a lake that I thought I knew well! Hidden treasures at every bend. Fun group of kayakers! If you haven't been to Cowan Lake, it is worth the drive!

We are still a "maybe", but don't wait around for us, if we show up we will catch up. We will probably run into you in the East patch of lotus blossoms.

Quick comment. I'm at CowEn lake right now. There is some sort of bike ride going on at 11am with over 400 cyclists. You may want to launch from another part of the lake today. :)

I am going to have to decline. I have a business trip planned and have little time to prepare. If it gets moved out to Aug 3, I am in.

I just got off the lake. Not a lot of open blooms, but many, many buds up and getting ready for a great show. Plenty to see today, but I think the next two weeks will get even better. Camping here. I can let you know what it looks like in the morning as far as weather. Sunday might be the better of the two days.

I will be camping for the weekend at the state park campground. I will meet the group that comes across the lake and join you there at the campground boat launch.

I have a rather bulky sit on top kayak which I need to replace with a smaller nimble craft if I am going to be serious about kayaking. Any chance I could have help getting my Ocean Kayak back on my minivan afterwards? Thanks.
