The Great Ohio River Swim scheduled for Sunday, September 29 will be at the Serpentine Wall and the race will start at 8:00 am. We are in need of volunteer safety paddler boats to act only as safety observers and escort the 150 swimmers across the "closed to powered boat traffic" Ohio River. If any swimmer needs emergency assistance, the safety boats will contact one of the powered jet skis in the area either by whistle or cell phone. So bring your boat, paddle, life vest/PFD, a whistle or cell phone if you would like to volunteer. The swimmer's course is 900 yards long from the Serpentine wall to the Ky shore and back to the boat ramp next to the Showboat Majestic at the Public Landing just downriver from the Serpentine Wall. The Safety kayakers will start alongside the swimmers and gradually spread out alongside the group and behind to watch for any signs of trouble or provide a "hang on" point for any swimmer if needed for a rest.
Volunteer paddlers can show up at the Public Landing parking lot along East Mehring Way any time between 7 AM and 7:30 AM. Supposedly, there is no parking fee for vehicles with a kayak/canoe in or on it. However, you can park and put in wherever you wish on either the Ohio or Ky shoreline. I am putting in at the Covington, Ky Mike Fink location. Just be at the public landing put-in with your kayak, paddle, PFD, and a whistle by 7:30 AM. The whole event will be over by 9 AM.
Normally, the volunteer kayakers take a short river paddle after the swimming event just to enjoy the downtown Ohio River even longer.
