WILDERNESS PADDLING – HOW YOU CAN ENJOY EXPERIENCES OF A LIFETIME

Wilderness should not be defined as the absence of the trappings of our everyday lives but rather as the presence of miraculous sights and experiences of a lifetime that only it can provide to you. Only a small percentage of us will ever enjoy these treasures because not many find the portals to the pristine enclaves of the best nature has to offer. This presentation can change that for you.

For the purpose of this event, we’ll explore wilderness paddling. You’ll get an overview of the types of opportunities, equipment, techniques, information sources, permits and other resources that will open a whole new world for you; one that 99% of the people you know will never experience. And, you’ll be treated to a visual presentation that takes you to some of the most remote paddling destinations.

Our presenter is Henry Dorfman, Henry has an extensive resume in paddling, is the founder and lead organizer of Cincypaddlers, and may be one of the best story tellers we've had the pleasure of presenting here at RRT.

Henry, Thanks for sharing your thoughts, top 10s, and the definition of wisdom. You are appreciated for everything you do for the paddling community!!!

It would be inappropriate for me to rate the presentation so I'll reflect on the audience. They were alert, engaged, polite and attentive.

I missed it! I am really sorry -- I went out to catch a bite to eat first, as usual took a book along with me, got caught up in the book.... :-( [Equally long drive for me as I too am in the Dayton area.] I would really have liked to have heard you speak, Henry. I also hereby repeat my invitation, at last season's initial meeting [also at RR&T], to lead any who want to go, on paddling trips on the incredibly beautiful rivers of northern Wisconsin as well as on the astonishing Kickapoo River of SW Wisconsin.

Henry, it was great to meet you and hear about your adventures. Long drive for me since I'm from the Dayton area but glad I came. Steve R took good notes so we won't forget your 10 tips. Plus we learned how to deal with alligators!

Thank you Henry for sharing your vast knowledge and experiences with all of us. RRT....Thank you for hosting this Event !

I thought this was a great way to learn about what cean be done if you put some effort into it. I hope you have talks like this more often. It could be about your experiences with different boats, gear, or even just local places.
I've never learned to roll or paddle whitewater. Lots of good things I am sure some of you have already done.

OK, somehow my earlier comment went away! ;-( I would like to stop afterwards for an adult beverage or two. Not sure wat our options are, but give it some thot.

If you plan on going out before the talk be sure to mention RRT for a 10% discount to any food order at Padrino or MJs on Main. Both are great, MJs with a bigger bar depending your group size. Just let your server know you are going to the RRT presentation. Let me know where you're going :)

I was thinking afterwards for an adult beverage or two. Nothing formal. We can talk about it before the actual event. I miss seeing everyone, so it will be nice to have some fellowship afterwards.

I didn't change the location. I just clicked on the map to see what might be in the area and it did that. Sorry :-\

The event is put on by Roads, Rivers and Trails and is open to the public, requiring no membership in anything.

    Ok, sorry about that!

    February 9, 2013

  • Bryan W.

I understand everyone is looking for a bar/restaurant to meet at in conjunction with this meet up, however if we can keep the "location" for this event the same so that those not going to dinner are not confused. Thank You

  • Bryan Wolf changed the location to Roads Rivers and Trails

sorry, it's an american legion hall, but here is the info.
http://www.local.com/business/details/milford-oh/the-american-legion-hall-rental-hall-rental-105686748/ And here is MJ's on main (apparently they have a private party room also )

http://www.mjsmilford.com (judging by the calendar, they don't have any bands there on the 12th.)

I google mapped it but could not get the map to post here :/
The distance between both places is 2 minutes by car and 8 minutes if you walk. * I am not the organizer, just throwing some suggestions out there* * On another note, would the river be a possible kayaking place in the spring/summer? I was not sure if there were any restrictions around this area*

    February 9, 2013

  • sabrina

Well, there is a VFW hall on Water St. in Milford, its down by the river (perfect place for kayakers!) And its not that far from MJ's either (by car, it's within 5 minutes of each other). You may be able to have the meeting at MJ's anyway, just let the owner know ahead of time and make sure no bands are playing that night.

    February 9, 2013

  • Kim removed the location. It was Roads Rivers & Trails

    February 8, 2013

  • Rob S.

Somebody asked me how much this cost. I thought it was free but I didn't know for sure. Does anyone know?

I'd like again to bring a modern cherry-wood canoe paddle, and this time show real-world strokes -- esp. in light of a misleading article on the subject in paddler.net!

    February 4, 2013

    • Bryan W.

Hey William, sounds like we'll have to talk to you about a seperate presentation. But for this talk RRT and Henry will guide the presentation.

      February 7, 2013

  • Bill G.

Free as far as I know!

    February 7, 2013

  • sabrina

How long will the presentation be?

    January 28, 2013

    • Bryan W.

Hey Sabrina, most of our presentations are an hour but Henry has a million stories so he'll probably just cater to the crowds attention

      January 28, 2013

    • sabrina

      Thanks!

      January 29, 2013
