Hunting for edible wild mushrooms

  • Mar 9, 2013 · 11:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

In this group learning hike, we will be looking for a few different types of mushrooms and generally investigating the world of mycology through hands on practice. I am confident with identifying Oyster and Cauliflower mushrooms, although if we find any others we can build identification skills by taking spore prints, referencing books, and taking photos for later viewing. If the opportunity arises, we can bring in someone who knows how to identify many of the edible species that are prolific in the forest.

This meetup date is flexible - the unfixed date so far is March 9th.

Things to bring would be:

Rain gear if it is raining, containers, black/white paper for taking spore prints, some snacks for a "snackluck" instead of a potluck because we will be outside, camera if you want to take some ID pictures for later research.

Aside from this meetup, I am offering two new workshops happening this spring. One of the workshops covers two medicinal Polypore mushrooms found in the local area including harvesting our find, all about their medicinal properties, and learning about preparation. If you would like to see more info about the workshops please check out this link.

I am also offering a 10% discount on my workshops for Tri-cities Permaculture members.

The first 5 people to share the event link on their Facebook will get 50g of my locally harvested wild-crafted medicinal/tonic mushrooms for making tea. Please send me a message for more details about this if you wish to receive this gift.

Should be around 2-3 hours Cameron. I'm going to send out an e-mail soon about details and see how many people still want to attend.

Alexander McNaughton was interested in leading a mushroom ID hike - if you want to make it more formal and learn more stuff, I can give you his email address. I think his charge was $25/person..?

    • Carl

Yeah for sure Erin, Please do send me his e-mail address. Always interested in helping to get good events happening.

I'm inerested, depending how strenuous this "hike" is. Would also like to know how long it will be: couple hours?

    February 27, 2013

    • Carl

Hi Shelagh, Crystal falls trail doesn't gain much elevation at all - pretty easy hike. It would probably be about 2-3 hours long is my guess.

My brother-in-law used to harvest wild mushrooms for a job, so he really knows his mushrooms. They live in Victoria, but I'm sure I could convince them to come for a weekend in March and he could guide us on mushroom hunt. I'm not sure how the timing works for mushrooms in March, but I could find out if people are interested...

    February 7, 2013

    • Carl

Awesome idea Kelsey. I know fall is a really prolific time to pick mushrooms but spring has a few also. It would be great to find an expert to guide and share some knowledge.

  • Joelle

I'd like to come -- this will be my opportunity to meet you all for the first time -- but it will depend on the date.
