The Open Data Protocol (OData) enjoyed a banner year in 2012 with a new version (3.0), submission to OASIS and expanded industry support. Although Microsoft's OData implementation had historically been bound to WCF, the newer ASP.NET WebAPI began in 2012 to reveal its partial OData implementation through releases 0.1-alpha, 0.2-alpha, and 0.3-rc. These represented no credible challenge to WCF Data Services until February 2013 saw the final release of Web API OData 4.0. We will explore how this latest version lets us leverage OData in our Web API-driven RESTful APIs and consider how it compares to the well-proven WCF Data Service approach which was also updated last year.
