I agree with Dan on all points. Written like a true music critic, Dan. Way to go!

This opera requires multiple viewings to be fully appreciated and I am so glad that I saw "The Nose" again. Shostakovich's youthful experimentation fit perfectly with the bizzare storyline. If you found yourself thinking "what the hell is going on here?", then you have realized Shostakovich's goal and understand the point of the opera. Shostakovich also utilized instruments in new ways. I noticed the trombones and their chromatic slides, new perfusion instruments, and the human voice becoming part of the orchestra instead of something something seperate, something "pretty" to which the orchestra accompanied. Shostakovicj utilized the human voice's capabilities beyond speech.

    Go see it again!
