On her way to a convent, Manon stops at in inn, falls in love with Des Grieux but flees to Paris with an elderly roué, tempted by wealth.  Des Grieux tries and fails to overcome his obsession with her by taking religious orders. • Des Grieux (a chevalier)...Rolando Villazón
  • Lescaut (Manon's cousin and guardian)...Alfredo Daza
  • Brétiny (wealthy Parisian, friend of Guillot)...Arrtu Kataja
  • Guillot (rich roué)...Alfredo Dara

Berlin State Opera, Daniel Barenboim conductor. 2007. Run time: 158m. Setting advanced to the 1950's from the 19th century.

Anna has it all, voice, acting ability, and looks. Really thought the production was wonderful. The story translated well to a more modern feel without feeling too forced.

The singing was exquisite, especially the singer in the role of Manon (along with her acting). I had feared the modern production would be distracting, but it worked well (for me; altho almost pushing to be "too much"). Alas, again I was saddened by the "trope" that the woman's guilt was greater.

I really liked the production and was especially pleased at how the emotional intensity built up as the Opera progressed. This was my first event and it was super. Thanks so much.

Very good casting and production. Barenboim's conducting was very appropriate for the French idiom.
