ATT No-drop Trail Skate in Durham

  • Mar 20, 2013 · 5:30 PM
  • American Tobacco Trail (ATT)

This is a no-drop skate open to all skaters and we skate at a speed that everyone is comfortable with, so beginners are encouraged to attend.

We skate on the American Tobacco Trail (ATT), which is built on an old railroad bed that is relatively flat and straight. Any hills are very gradual, although a couple are long enough that you can pick up some speed. Moderate braking skills are required. Let us know if you need some braking tips.

As with all our group skates, helmets are required. Wrist guards, elbow and knee pads are recommended. You should also bring water or a sports beverage for hydration.

The ATT is about 6.5 miles from end-to-end and we skate out-and-back for a total distance of 13 miles. Since you can turn around at any point, let us know if you're not comfortable with this distance.

Directions to the starting location - Southpoint Crossing Shopping Center. Note that we meet in the parking lot directly in front of the Souper Salad, NOT the detached parking lot directly adjacent to Fayetteville St.

Here is a link to a map that very precisely shows where we park our cars, the starting point of the trail, the route, and the ending point of the trail where we typically turn around and head back.

We'll meet at 5.30pm and start skating by 5.45pm. If you can't arrive early, please try to gear up as quickly as you can when you arrive. We will aim to be back at the parking lot before the sun sets at 7.27pm.

In the event of questionable weather we will make a go/no-go call 90 minutes before the scheduled start so check the Meetup site after 4.00pm.

Thanks guys for coming skating tonight! It was a great skate, if a little bumpy! See you both soon, I hope!

Can’t make it tomorrow, but I expect to make most of the Wednesday skates starting next week.

Maybe we could try to do two fast "laps" on Mondays to finish off any lingering traces of hangover.

I'll be busting a move to get from Chapel Hill to Hillsborough to Durham.... but will make it by 5:30!

Sounds good Emily. We won't be departing until 5.45pm. The sun sets at 7.27pm tonight, so my hope is to get back to the parking lot by then, even it if means not skating the entire trail. But I am very optimistic! :-)
