Neuse River Greenway Trail Skate

Let's go and skate the Neuse River Greenway Trail. The trail is newly paved, runs for 6 miles, and there are no road crossings, making it ideal for skating. Any style of skates are welcome.

What: A no-drop skate of the Neuse River Greenway Trail. Here are some photos from our first and second event on the trail.

Where: The Neuse River Greenway Trail Head, off Falls of Neuse Road. It is very important that you study the map carefully since the entrance is tricky to find.

  • I have created an annotated photo that should be helpful. The red X marks the turning to the parking lot.
  • Please allow enough time to find the parking lot. Call me on[masked] if you get lost.
  • There was construction in this area the last time I was there, so access might be tricky.
  • You must ignore all the "ROAD CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC" signs! You are not "thru" traffic!

WhenWe'll meet at 1.15pm and start skating by 1.30pm. If you can't arrive early, please try to gear up as quickly as possible.

Distance: 12 miles. The trail runs for 6 miles in one direction.

Ability: Since the trail follows the Neuse River it is mostly flat, but there are some hills and sharp turns, so this trail is for intermediate skaters. Being able to brake is essential; here's a helpful video.

Safety First: Everyone is required to wear a helmet, and wrist guards are recommended. Pro-tec brand gear is very good; available online here.

Hydration: Bring a water bottle, or hydration back pack. Water fountains are typically winterized until the summer.

Bathrooms: There are no bathrooms at the trail head parking lot. But there are porta-potty bathrooms at the end of the trail, where we rest before heading back.

Weather: In the event of questionable weather we will make a go/no-go call 90 minutes before the scheduled start so please check the Meetup after noon.

Thanks to everyone that came out today to skate the trail. I was happy to see so many skaters! I shall be at Jellybeans in Cary on Wednesday night, then back on the Neuse River Greenway in a couple of weeks! Cheers!

For those new to this location, meetup has screwed up the map again! I'll try and fix it from my phone. Call me if you get lost. Sorry!!

Without wishing to jinx us, the weather is looking dry for tomorrow afternoon's skate! We need this after the last event got rained off. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

If it's raining on Sunday 4/28, would anybody be interested in ice skating?

I'd be interested in some indoor roller skating. I don't have ice skates.

We may come, skated this trail from Clayton last weekend going north, turned around after 5 mile as I was with the girls.
Great almost flat ride, parking lot with enough space and mobile toilet (no water) GPS address at 1376 N O'Neil St Clayton, NC 27520 will bring you very close.

Thanks Jan, I shall investigate that. I hope to see you and the girls on Sunday! Fingers crossed for dry weather.

Jan, we live in the Clayton area and often use that section for biking and running but not skating as yet. Let us know when you're interested in going out that way.
