Carolina Century (external event), 21mi, 31mi, 51mi, ..., 82mi, 102mi

Summary:

Carolina Century 2012

102 * 82 * 72 * 64 * 51 * 31 * 21-mile routes
10 Hours of Support / SAG!

All proceeds for people with MS!

Excellent routes, designed by a veteran skater, for skaters!

Details:

This will be the last big event most of us do in 2012. The Carolina Century is a skater and cyclist friendly event put together by Blake of Roadskater.net fame. Because Blake is a skater, he's chosen a great route that is filled with good pavement and great rollouts after nearly all hills, requiring little or no braking over nearly 100% of the course. There are multiple distance options ranging from 21 to 102 miles, with plenty of choices in between. Ten hours of great support means that even cyclists who enjoy long rides but don't want to "hammer" it can ride up to 102 miles at a comfortable pace. Event registration is very inexpensive, and proceeds go to help fight MS.

Registration link will be up soon.

Note that we will use this Meetup event just to keep our fellow Triangle skaters informed, and perhaps to arrange to car pool. Please indicate your mode of travel (skates or a bike?) and your likely event distance. However...

YOU MUST GO TO THE EVENT WEB SITE TO REGISTER!

Hope to see you there!

Awesome! The volunteer staff were extremely friendly, the course was well marked and a great combo of uphills and down, and the lunch afterwards hit the spot.

I am biased but think it was 5-star pain and gain. The trees were amazing this year. 102 miles in the wind for me!

Hey Scott! Congrats on completing the 51mi! Last year I did it solo so I feel your pain! It is definitely a very challenging, yet rewarding 51mi.

Wow, that 51-miler was tough! I thought I was about done climbing Iron Works Road. The downhills were awesome! It took me 5 hours (with stops) starting at 730, so I didn't really see any of you all. Next time!

Good to meet you too! I'm hoping to do a couple more skates in apex or RTP before the holidays and it gets cold. Can't do it next two weekends but maybe 2nd weekend of Nov if the weather is nice.

I posted the reminder because I just found one wheel that no longer rolled freely. It was a good reminder to fully inspect equipment, including brakes, etc.

Reminder to everyone: do final inspection & test roll before the morning of the event! If you're doing large changes like putting new wheels, bearings, etc, make sure you roll a few miles on them before Sat morning!!

Will anyone be going to the dinner the night before? Has it been helpful in the past? Thanks.

    October 16, 2012

    • Michael B.

I won't be at the dinner, but prior dinners at Tour to Tanglewood were always helpful for getting organized and what to expect at certain points on the route(s).

Great, thanks for the info. I just registered for the 7:30- 51 miler. I'll be cruising on rec skates at a chill 10-12 mph if anyone is interested. Can't wait!

Its looking like 45 degrees overnight and high of 66, sunny. For me, the 9am start and 51mi route looks like the best option.

Yep, that sounds great and the 51 is an awesome route with good roads plenty of areas to coast/draft + solid rest stops - should work out well.

I just registered so I hope to see all of you there.

Is anyone else planning to skate the 31 miles? Would it be illegal to jump loops and make it a 41 miler?

    October 12, 2012

    • Tom P.

I would be interested in doing the 31 miles with you. I've done very little road skating but a lot of trail skates. So this would be a bit of a first.

      October 15, 2012

    • Tom P.

And maybe jumping the loop for an extra 10 depending on how the feet feel?

      October 15, 2012

  • Dave

I may start with the early crowd if it's not too cold. Looking like 50 overnight - about as cool as I'd be ok with. Otherwise I'll be with the 9am crowd

I will probably do the 51mi. Last year I did it solo and it was really spectacular.
