  • Is it the state of our souls we should concern ourselves with, or the state of our flesh? We live in a culture of ambivalence when it comes to these issues; is it possible to approach them from a philosophical perspective and arrive at anything other than pop psychology? How do those on each side of the issue describe themselves philosophically? Though this issue has overlaps with religious belief, I think there is plenty to be said without venturing too far into that territory--I'd hate to reduce a conflict I think so essential to human existence to a theistic argument. After all, there is still indulgence in the withholding!

It's odd that someone's paying fees for the site, but nothing happens. If anyone's looking for intelligent conversations, my book club is pretty ace. http://www.meetup.com...

would love to see this discussion take place. Had a conversation about Hedonism with my son who is majoring in Philosophy when I recently visited him in Seattle and I am no where near done warping my mind around the concept and my thoughts on it. Who sets a date? Alex Harrell - are you the organizer? I, for one, cannot do Tuesday or Thursday nights until the academic year ends...

These concepts exist simultaneous as fluctuating concepts within my relative experience - to consider them as extremes seems like a fun challenge and discussion.

I see no reason to posit this in adversarial terms or as an either or situation. Both have value. Zero sum games are too limiting.

As long as the H and A respect each other and leave each other alone, I don't see the need for putting them in an adversary position. Also, people shouldn't be limited by such definitions: you can explore hedonistic life and ascetic, embrace both at different times or different aspects of your life.

Why the division? Why not sympathetic multiplicity? I believe high levels of consciousness can integrate very different states and needs to adaptive compatibility.
