Thanks all, I like (wo xi huan) this definition, xiang xia ren, because I already know ren (zhong guo ren, meiguo ren, dan mai ren etc).  Typically darker skin (a red neck) because of exposure to the sun in the fields. Yes, here in USA rednecks are a big joke, they have a goofy dialect (Goofy the cartoon character the redneck friend of the clever Mickey Mouse), they know how to kick back and relax, go fishing. Personal hygiene is not a priority, including brushing teeth. Andrew, if you are a redneck, you dont need to know how to ask for a bathroom, they are called woods or bushes haha.

Cheng li ren, like that too, Cheng (town) li (in) ren (people), city-people, typically pale from lack of sunlight, or vanity, typically wear modern clothes, likes fine culture and art. Everything has to be Fei Chang Hao!

Im not from USA either, I come from the happiest country in the world, Denmark www.denmark.dk, where people seem to have found a good balance between the extreme redneck (hen xing xia ren) and extreme city-people (hen cheng li ren). Went to the state fair 4 times and now have a redneck imbalance (too much fried food) the yang quality?

Hi,

Interesting.  I am Chinese. I did not know the word "redneck" before I got the states.

To my best knowledge,
1. Chinese definition:
it's  xiang (1) xia (4) ren (2)?????people live in rural places?
2. Characteristics:
Simple, generally kind to people and hospitable, unnecessarily too nice to foreigner, not sophisticated, especially for those never been to Cities.
lacking of knowledge about the current world as much as Townspeople do, from "superficial" things like good taste of clothing, food, places for having fun.., to sophisticated stuff like arts, politics, movie, stocks, why wars started, globalisation..

These are changing.
3. Townspeople,
???, Cheng (2) li (3) ren (2), people have more advantages than xiang xia ren. Almost all of them could track family tree back to rural people.

Are you planning to be able to identify some Chinese redneck here or in China?

BTW, correct me if I say, in usa the trend is others think redneck is a joke, redneck think back they are joke.  In China, townspeople think rural people is a joke, and rural say nothing but just work hard to be townspeople.

Ni Hao,

A few questions for the group:

How do you say redneck in Mandarin Chinese?
What are some of the characteristics of a Chinese redneck?
What is the opposite of a redneck (in Chinese)?

Also remember to try the new Hibatchi Chinese Restaurant in Cary (close to 35) on the corner of Kildare Farm Road and Cary Parkway. Bonus question: is Hibatchi a Chinese word?

Xie xie,
Thomas Nielsen
