Here's some information that might help with your trip to China, especially in Shanghai, where it's all about business.

From my website:
1) What to do in Shanghai?

2) News related to China:

To network with business people there, I suggest you guys visit the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, most job hunting is done there for non-Chinese citizens.

If you want to be in China after you are done with school, but don't have a job yet, this will be a great place to start - really good pay and good people to work with. I worked for Ken and Brian in 1997, they treat the teachers well and apparently the school has grown into be the best in Shanghai or even China.  Ken Carroll is also the co-founder of It might be worthwhile to visit the school while you are in Shanghai if you are interested.

Also you might want to check out these sites, most expats in China join these active networks and they have events going on all the time. Lot of the information - where to travel, to eat, to play - is current and excellent. Also, make sure you get yourself a full massage in Shanghai!

Good luck and enjoy your trip in China, please share with us your experience when you come back!

I'm tyring to set up a small mandarin class in carrboro (6x1.5hr) @ Chicle. We're trying to set it up for Wed night either 6-730 or 7-830. I have 4 people, but if we get 1 to 4 more we get a discount on the class pricing ( this isn't a free one, see below for email) . This would be geared for people that don't know any, mandarin and we'll be asking the to cover things that might be useful to a business traveler. I don't plan on covering any chinese characters due to the short duration of the class, but that may depend on the instructor.
The background on this, is that my MBA program has a global immerson elective where we are going to china for 2 weeks, may 2 to may 17th. A couple of us would like to try and learn a little mandarin before we  go. We're going to bejing, shanghai and hong kong.
I thought I'd ask and see if anyone from this group would be interested.
We'd like to get something started over the next 2-4 weeks, so let me know if you're interested.
------------ original email

I found a local language school in Carrboro, While they don't have an on going Mandarin class, they can set up a custom one for us and have it taylored to business oriented dialog and it will be geared to people who don't know any mandarin..  We need at least 3 people, but the price gets much cheaper if we get up to 8 people. Some of the emails I've been trading are below.

We can choose a night during the week or they may be able to accomodate weekends.

Basically for  6 weeks, meeting 1 x weekly for 1.5 hours, probably from 7-830pm (flexible on times).

$40 for materials, print outs books, etc

3-4 people = $170/ea for

5-6 people = $108/ea for

7-8 people = $85/ea for

Let me know if anyone else is interested. I'd like to get something set up to start in early January if possible.
