Buddhism is classed as one of the great religions yet there is no God to obey, no dogma to believe in.
Buddhism provides us with practical, effective ways to change yet is not just another therapy.
Buddhism offers a spiritual and transcendental perspective, its vision of what a human being can become takes us far beyond the province of psychology.
This is the first of six Tuesday evenings in which we'll be exploring key Buddhist principles and their relevance to life in the 21st century. We'll also learn a traditional Buddhist meditation, the Mindfulness of Breathing.
Led by Alobhin, a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order, the meetings will be aimed at newcomers to Buddhism and anyone who would like to refresh their knowledge and practice. We'll meet at 7.30pm and finish around 9.30 - 9.45pm.
At future meetings we'll be looking at the following topics:
Week 2: Who was the Buddha?
Week 3: The Buddhist approach to ethics
Week 4: What is meditation?
Week 5: The development of wisdom
Week 5: The poetic dimension
We'll also learn a loving kindness meditation called the Metta Bhavana.
Anyone who would like to take their interest further is welcome to join our small, friendly group which meets at the Quaker Meeting House on Thursday evenings at 7.00pm.
