FREE Monthly Documentary Screening & Discussion Night

We have located a new venue to host our monthly documentary screening:  Guerin Recreation Center at 1600 Jackson Street, Philadelphia, PA.  This meetup will now take place on the 3rd Thursday of every month.  First meetup at the new venue will be on April 17th.

Film for April 17th:

I Am Fishead

It is a well-known fact that our society is structured like a pyramid. The very few people at the top create conditions for the majority below. Who are these people? Can we blame them for the problems our society faces today? Guided by the saying "A fish rots from the head" we set out to follow that fishy odor. What we found out is that people at the top are more likely to be psychopaths than the rest of us.

Who, or what, is a psychopath? Unlike Hollywood's stereotypical image, they are not always blood-thirsty monsters from slasher movies. Actually, that nice lady who chatted you up on the subway this morning could be one. So could your elementary school teacher, your grinning boss, or even your loving boyfriend.

The medical definition is simple: A psychopath is a person who lacks empathy and conscience, the quality which guides us when we choose between good and evil, moral or not. Most of us are conditioned to do good things. Psychopaths are not. Their impact on society is staggering, yet altogether psychopaths barely make up one percent of the population.

Through interviews with renowned psychologist Professor Philip Zimbardo, leading expert on psychopathy Professor Robert Hare, former President of Czech Republic and playwright Vaclav Havel, authors Gary Greenberg and Christopher Lane, professor Nicholas Christakis, among numerous other thinkers, we have delved into the world of psychopaths and heroes and revealed shocking implications for us and our society.

Also, since Mark brought up the "perfection" of nature, I knew there were several species that are predators of their own kind, but couldn't be accurate as to which, so here we have examples:

So... "cute" dolphins and lions, of all animals, don't show much preference for their own kin.

Can we have more discussion rather than accept "expert" claims. Its easy to label a few psychopaths without understanding our own connection to a system that favors their dominance. There are definitions to clarify like "intelligent vs. brutal action", or "free will vs. brainwashed passive attitude", and what’s more damaging. Can we continue a discussion n the next meeting?
    Questions I'd like to pose:
    1. If psychopaths lack a limbic section depriving them of empathy, what separates them from lets say autistic people or from another mentally ill person? Are we not being "psychopaths" if we dont try to understand how that label is a valid distinction?
    2. If the majority of people are not bad but "passive", isn't being passive as "bad" as being a psychopath, or even worse, since that passiveness isnt coming from a dysfunctional brain, but from willful apathy?
    3. What conditions have to exist in order to say that a person has "free will", and what to do if those conditions are not present?

Hello group. Hey Mark, I will be showing this film out here in Phoenix too on Monday the 21st for our monthly screening. I just watched the new documentary on Donald Rumsfeld called The Unknown Known, and couldn't help but notice the psychopath behind all the B.S. that came out of his mouth. If you haven't seen it yet, here is a link to the torrent on Piratebay:[720p]_HDRiP_x264_-_TheKing Be well folks.
