Mock Half-Iron aka Boca Death March

Yep, it's that time of year! Time to see how your training is coming along. With Augusta 70.3 on September 29, the Great Floridian Triathlon mid-October and Ironman Florida November 3, plus numerous sprints and olympic distances, this mock triathlon is a great way to gauge your training, nutrition and endurance is coming along.

NOTE: Get to the park before 6:45 AM to avoid paying the $17 entrance fee! The gate opens at 6:00 AM - the guard starts manning the gate around 6:45. Please get there with plenty of time to set up and start swimming around 7am!

Transition will be in the southern-most parking lot circle of South Beach Park. Provided we have someone to watch transition during the swim, laid out transitions and the bikes can be left next to the cars; otherwise, the bikes will have to be left in the cars or locked to your car rack or pavilion.

The courses described below are for the half-iron distance triathlon. You are welcome to shorten the distance to meet your race schedule, training or comfort level. This time of year is generally hot & humid, so pack accordingly and if need to, only do one or two of the legs and/or shorten the distance. This is a training event, not a race, even though you may treat it as such, especially with regards to transition, but please exercise caution and stay safe!


Swim

We start out in the ocean, swimming north 0.6 miles along the shore (there will either be a buoy or some other marker, possibly on the shore), turning around and heading back. Head back to transition, hop on your bike and head out of the park, turning north onto A1A/Ocean Drive.

Bike

Observe the Rules of the Road!! Pass other cyclists on the right, watch for red lights at intersections, be wary of pedestrians, and be sure to look for vehicles when turning around. Make sure you have all of your gear and supplies with you as there will be no SAG out there! Carry your phone, wear Road ID, make sure you have spare tubes and CO2, and a working bike computer to measure distance.

Head north until Barton Road (appx 25.5 mile), turn around and head south. Go past Palmetto until the intersection of Ocean Blvd and Hillsboro Blvd, turn around again, heading north until the entrance for South Beach Park, and turn into the park, returning back to transition.

Run

Put your bike away and get your run shoes on! Cross the street to take advantage of the wide sidewalk. From Palmetto and Spanish River Blvd is about 2.5 miles (turn back for 5 miles). You can either do 2+ loops of Palmetto-Spanish River or go past either intersection to get the extra mileage. Wear a Garmin or gps monitor to gauge how far you have gone and time. Either finish in the transition or the ocean for immediate cooling off!

Finishers of the complete half-iron will receive a pat on the back and a possible frozen treat, depending on what others bring. We might even stop for ice cream!

    Had a late night with the family last night. Just dressed up now and ready but GPS says their is no way I can get to the park before 6:45 or the 7 am start time. Have fun everyone, next year for me.

    Current forecast for Sunday looks windy (10mph out of the east) but that could change. If it doesn't improve (or gets worse) a determination will be made race time on swimming. Bring goggles and swim cap regardless!

      What? I want my medal for gerting up before 5 and driving to Boca! That is my acheivement. LMAO just kidding. And yes I'm interested in ordering medal after the event. Yep I'll be there doing my usual stunt (participate in a crazy event requiring weeks of training haunt only trained for 1) ha ha ha....I'm going to outfit a cooler somehow to the bike an bring deli meat, bread, fruit and Gatorade an water. At te end of this event I will have gained weight instead I lost ha ha ha!!!
