Tucson Atheists Monthly Meetup

  • This location is shown only to members

This month we'll have our normal program including our Atheist quote, cartoon, and news items. We'll have our announcements, too. The subject of the meeting is:

Are Christians being persecuted in America?

Note: There was a recent video posted on YouTube by some teenagers that claim that Christianity is being completely frozen out of America. You can watch it HERE.

I'll play a response video and we'll discuss the issue.

See you there.

This is a recurring meeting. The group meets on the third Monday of the month at the Denny's on Speedway. The meeting officially begins at 7PM but many people choose to meet earlier to socialize before the meeting. I start setting up equipment around 6 and enjoy the company while I get the equipment ready for the meeting.

I have never said other than the original as I was taught pre-McCarthy era, one nation - Indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

I have rarely been questioned, even as a kid, about shutting my trap on this minuscule but very invasive abrasion which was added to the pledge by a herd mentality vote of congress in fear of "godless communism." Yes, the ramifications of "under Allah" are as true as adding under Buddha, Rhama, etc. or even an "even handed" almost endless list of gods. None belong in the pledge or reflect the author's intent or spell out our national purpose. The true pledge, as written, reflects religious plurality, tolerance and a secular rule of law, something the fractious christian sects trying to preempt critical thinking seem to forget.

To the God Bless America crowd, I offer this litmus test of whether the principle of official prayer is acceptable: Your child comes home from school and says, "they changed the Pledge so that we had to say 'one Nation under Allah . . ." If you would fight against this, then you know (finally) why some of us fight against official support for your god.

      That's a great reply, Ben.

On Monday evening, while we were discussing the new kids video advocating the intrusion of religion into civil government and schools in the US, we seem to have missed this related news announcement that appeared earlier on Monday:

As to the teen-oriented "persecution" video, we should judge any propaganda piece not just by what it says, as by what it leaves out--which was supplied by the Amazing Atheist.

I was pondering for a moment what "the Atheist's Number" would be. Then it hit me: 0.

    May 19, 2013

    • Don L.

Well it definitely wouldn't be an imaginary number...

Why not? How about a spot on the imaginary/real number plane? An area deep in a fantastic, utterly bottomless, Julia/Mandelbrot whirlpool. It would represent the amazing complexity that can arise from 'relatively' simple mathematical or physical laws. (Something to nicely refute the Creationists' absurd Tornado>747 proof-of-gawd argument.)
