The West-side Meetup

Casual discussion with a suggested topic, and beer. This group meets on the first Sunday of the month, and welcomes all atheist, atheist friendly, agnostic, skeptical, and free-thinking people.

The December topic is "The angry/arrogant atheist", suggested by Wade as a companion to last months "the stigma of atheism". Wade won't be here and asked me to facilitate, I think due to a comment I made at one of these gatherings!

From Merriam-Webster: "arrogance" (noun): an insulting way of thinking or behaving that comes from believing that you are better, smarter, or more important than other people

I googled "arrogant atheist" and came up with a few interesting links:

Thoughts for the evening:

- Is arrogance ever justified?

- Will a truly deeper knowledge of the subject appear as arrogance? How do you differentiate between actual arrogance and perceived arrogance? Is there a difference?

I'm a definite maybe for tonight. I agree that this is a great topic. I'm put off by any group that declares its singular apprehension of the "truth" and asserts that anybody who doesn't agree is an idiot. And when an atheist does that, what makes him or her any different from a religionist? (And if you answer "being right" you've proved my point.)

I understand but, rest assured, this atheist group does not define my thoughts, but they are at least barking in the same forest.

I find atheists to be a pretty humble lot. They freely assert their religious friends are intelligent, thoughtful people. I never heard anyone in our group refer to anyone as an idiot. There are some public atheists who are angry and bitter...I'm thinking of Christopher Hitchens here. I always thought he would have made his point better if he used a little humor...like George Carlin...but he didn't seem to have it in him.

On the topic of angry atheists, this is an excellent read by Greta Christina and is quite good. And amusing. And true.

This month's topic will be "Arrogant Angry Atheists." It will be hosted by the one and only Patrick Sterling, our group's Movie Coordinator. It's an important, juicy, and thought provoking topic. Be there or be square.
