Caffeinated Godlessness

Let's get together and discuss topics in atheism, politics, culture, and anything else that our brains come up with. We always start with a central topic, and then let the discussion go where it will.

This discussion group often reaches into history and theoretical concepts, which means that we discuss not just current topics, but how the past and the possibilities of the future may affect it.  It is not necessarily a goal-oriented discussion or a planning session, as much as it is a chance to play in the mental field of these ideas, from as many angles as possible.  If you like to discuss in that way, this group is for you.

If you have a topic you'd like to discuss, please email me. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Hope to see you there!

Nancy

On Thursday evening, in my frustration with trying to understand the discussion, I raised my voice. For that I apologize to those who were present.

Yeah, I didn't see any issue with you raising your voice. You were trying to get a question answered, and hopefully we were able to.

As far as I'm concerned, it was a good topic with a lot of emotion from everyone. No one was upset with the others, but rather upset at the topic itself.

Personally, I feel that's a good thing. It's part of admitting that there is an inequality issue here and we need to work on erasing it. Determining where the inequality started is a great was to start discussing how to end it.

The passion ignited was a breath of fresh air, so many people today live in ignorance and pretend there is nothing to be mad about or expect things to change on their own. Getting the dialogue going is half the battle. Nothing wrong with differences in opinions, these things can affect people in different ways.

Hi, All. Last meetup was pretty intense, and I am very sorry for any suffering that might have caused. It was hard for me, too, but I do appreciate that people care so much. It's why I love this group. I have noticed a few great ideas for topics here in teh discussion post, but I regret to say that I don't always check here, so if you ahve an idea, please email me anytime! I am alwasy looking for new topics.

Missed the discussion would be interesting talk about the jews and the open hate-love relationship.

Need to be careful with that specific topic as it can become very political very quick. This is why the topic of Palestine/Israel wouldn't be discussed - it can devolved into something completely unrelated to atheism and with this group, I could see a lot of hurt feelings.

Wha, didn't realize politics is taboo here; turns out this group is strictly about religion, even if it's anti religion. I'm in the wrong place.

I was thinking it might be fun to counter those guys with a sign saying "Free Hugs" and then give compliments to anyone they yell at.

No shortage of passion in these discussions.

Wait a minute- who are you saying hates the Jews? The Christian right? The Jews are the closest thing to God for them; they can do no wrong, I know this first hand: these people were my students.

As often focusing on too specific an event, this time by some crazy priest-who cares. Also as usual all these supposedly liberal pluralistic people ganged up on me for daring to express something different. I'm out.

I don't like yelling. This was a hard group to sit through. We really need to work on group behaviors.

I have a topic I'd like to discuss: the Religious right's fierce blind support of Israel as opposed to the Palestinians and Arabs in general, regardless of the atrocities committed against the Palestinians in the illegally occupied territories. All because Jesus was a Jew, and the official US policies pretty much follows suit. They viscerally hate all Arabs and Muslims and they truly believe that a good Arab is a dead Arab. Let's discuss this calamity.

The Presbyterian Church and many other churches have been campaigning to divest from Israel for years. When questioned, they can never provide evidence for their accusations or why they single out Israel, the only nation in the Middle East where gays can live openly and where self-criticism of the government won't cost you your life.

I should also mention that if our atheist group is going to be used as a platform for a member to rant on a political issue that actually has nothing to do with atheism, count me out. That's not what an atheist discussion group should be about, and I hope the leadership won't allow it.

a topic that I would like to see discussed. How to tactfully stop people from evangelizing and sermonizing at me (where it matters to be polite and tactful)
