Potluck Picnic on Mt Lemmon

Let's do our traditional spring/summer potluck picnic up on Mt Lemmon. As usual, we'll meet up at the Box Elder picnic area, just past mile marker 23. We'll meet at Cafe LeBuzz (intersection of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway), arrange carpools, and head up the mountain. We will depart from LeBuzz at 9am, so please arrive at least ten minutes prior to that so we can get going on time. It usually takes us about an hour to get from LeBuzz to our destination.

There are currently fire restrictions for all of Coronado National Forest, but we are still allowed to use the charcoal grills and can have a fire if it's in one of the fire rings. (http://www.nps.gov/sagu/parkmgmt/upload/SEZRestrictionsNR-04-30-2014_Final.pdf). I expect we will be warm enough to not need a fire, though if anyone wants to bring some wood, that's always fun.

Our site has pit toilets, but they've been pretty clean and decent for our past trips.

When you RSVP, please let us know what you're bringing so we don't end up with fifteen fruit salads. I'll bring some beer and veggie burgers.

For anyone who doesn't know what to bring, things like paper plates/napkins, chips & dip, soda, fruit and veggie trays, cookies or dessert items are always welcome.

Soon after we got to the picnic site it started drizzling ice, I and my friend were cold and wet, so we left before it really got going. Even so, it was nice to see everyone and I'm sure it was a good time once it warmed up. Maybe next year we can grab a picnic site at a lower elevation. :) I left my container of baked beans and a container of sliced strawberries for everyone. If the containers didn't get lost, I'll pick them up at the next meeting at the Maker House, on June 1 st, if someone can bring them for me. Speaking of which, how were the beans? Thanks to all the folks who we met there. It was a pleasure.

Stuart Cooper I have your strawberry container and will bring with me when we meet in the Maker house. And if I happen upon Heather, who has your other container, tomorrow I will also get the other container

What's the story on Forest Access Fees? They seem to come and go in random fashion. Are they currently in effect? If so, no biggie, but I need remember to bring a little cash.

    And/or picnic site fee?

    TY

    May 23

    • Cymosa

A federal appeals court in 2012 slapped down the U.S. Forest Service for charging fees for those who want to park and hike in the Catalina Mountains.
Judge Robert Gettleman, said federal law “clearly contemplates that individuals can go to a place offering facilities and services without using the facilities and services and without paying a fee.”
For example, he said, the law precludes charging someone who walks, boats, rides or hikes through the forest without using the facilities and services.

Not clear if the Forest Service will consider the picnic area a site with amenities. Their policy is to keep you in a state of doubt and fear.

I'll be bringing chips and homemade salsa verde.

I have never to the picnic area on Mt Lemmon and I'm curious if there is space for volley ball, badminton, or (?) and if there is - does anyone have any equipment they could bring?

    May 23

    • Philip M.

The picnic area we will be using is not really suited to anything like volleyball or badminton. It is somewhat uneven and sloped.

      May 23

    • Greg C.

Jarts, anyone? :D Who can bring a set of proper (metal tipped!) Jarts? :)

      May 23

  • Philip M.

Folding or camping chairs would be great if anyone has any they can bring. This is looking to be our largest group yet. The benches, logs, and stumps will probably not be adequate.

    May 23

  • Greg C.

Dead animal flesh - species and shape TBD, and mesquite wood.

    • Greg C.

With all the bratwurst on the menu, I might opt for a salad of some sort. Potato salad, at least, or maybe even something that's outright green and fluffy! Will still being dead tree and charcoal.

  • Micaela

Change of plans, can't make it. Have a good time everybody!

    May 23

We will bring soda, more brats, buns and a dessert.

I'll probably make a pot of seasoned Pinto Beans.

Changed up on the beans - making Vegetarian Boston Baked Beans "Sonoran Style". I also have about 8 ears of corn I got for free today. I'll bring them up if there's going to be a grill and coals to cook them on?

      May 22

    • Greg C.

Grill provided, AFAIK. I'll bring mesquite and some charcoal. The corn will be most welcome, I don't see too many veggies on the menu.

      1 · May 22

  • Amberlei S.

It doesn't look like anyone has committed to bringing plates/cups/silverware, so I will handle those unless someone tells me it's already covered. I will grab a case of water too.

    Is any leaving from downtown?

I will bring a couple of Mediterranean dishes

Is anyone planning on camping overnight up there after the picnic? Just curious... I was contemplating a Mt. Lemmon overnight camping trip that weekend.

    May 14

    • Greg C.

I might be game. Philip, where's Kim at? She's always talking about camping expeditions.

I hope to attend the Tucson Hiking Chiricahua outing on the 25th, so my camping is unlikely.

Will also bring my dog Bodhi. She is great with other dogs, we go to the dog park regularly. If anyone else brings their's rest assured, Bodhi is friendly. She also likes humans and won't bother anyone except maybe want to say hello.

I forgot to mention - this is kid- and dog-friendly, as long as they are well-behaved :)
